These volumes represent lectures in military history at
the Army Service Schools at Fort Leavenworth given by
Matthew F. Steele. Eighty percent (80%) of the lectures
and Maps are devoted to Civil War campaigns and
battles. The remaining 20% of the lectures and Maps
cover The Colonial Wars, The Revolutionary War, The
War of 1812, and The Mexican War, and The Spanish-
American War.
None of the maps were drawn originally for these
lectures; all are photographic reproductions of either
official maps or maps accompanying works that have

Vicksburg could not have been taken by land if the Union forces did not
control of the river. The union gun boats at Fort Henry, Fort Donelson and
Shiloh played a major role in all three battles!
"Dam the Torpedos, Full speed ahead" at the entrance to Mobile Bay. Blockade of
all Gulf ports meant the Gulf Confederate states could not obtain the weapons
required to equip their troops.
