Calcutt, Rebecca Barbour - RICHMOND'S WARTIME HOSPITALS - Pelican Publishing - ISBN# 1589802977 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 224pp - Notes - Biblio - Index - Photos - Doctors attempting to deal with the carnage wrought by the Civil War faced more difficult challenges than the sheer number of the wounded. Fought at the very end of what is known as "the medical Middle Ages," the Civil War predated modern knowledge of bacteria and antiseptics. Doctors, who were then deemed fully trained after only a two-year course of study, had few diagnostic tools beyond their own reckoning at hand. While medical science enjoyed several advances during the Civil War, the doctors and hospitals in the Southern states faced overwhelming casualties with few supplies and inadequate personnel. By focusing on facilities in Virginia's capitol, Mrs. Calcutt illustrates how exhausted resources rapidly defeated southern doctors' heroic efforts. Richmond's Wartime Hospitals covers the more than fifty hospitals located in Richmond during the Civil War period, including each facility's location, dates of operation, and surgeon in charge. Where archival information is available, Mrs. Calcutt includes detailed descriptions of the buildings, first-person accounts of day-to-day operations, and other historical anecdotes - Publisher's List Price = $22 - Our Price - $19.95

ALEXANDER AND CASTLE THUNDER - McFarland Pub - ISBN# 0786418591 - BRAND NEW Oversized Laminated Hardcover - 279pp - Photos - Notes - Chronology - Biblio - Index - Captain George W. Alexander was a controversial figure in Richmond during the Civil War, honored as a hero and condemned as a cruel prison superintendent. He was appointed Provost Marshall and put in charge of Castle Thunder in 1862, after escaping imprisonment at Fort McHenry. At his Confederate prison in Richmond, he oversaw prisoners of all types, including Confederates, women, slaves, Federal deserters, and spies. This biography traces his entire life from his career in the U.S. Navy and the voyage with Commodore Perry to Japan, to his hiding in Canada after Lee's surrender, to his editorship of Washington DC's Sunday Gazette and death in 1895. The main body of the text concentrates on Alexander's time at Castle Thunder, but the book also explores the evolution of the prison system and the provost marshall's department, touching on unusual prisoners and escape attempts - Publisher's List Price = $45 - Our Price - $40 - Softcover $36

Casstevens, Frances H. - TALES FROM THE NORTH AND THE SOUTH : TWENTY-FOUR REMARKABLE PEOPLE AND EVENTS OF THE CIVIL WAR - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 0786428708 -BRAND NEW Laminated Softcover - 374pp - Index - Biblio - Notes - Photos - In June 1862, James J. Archer was promoted to the rank of brigadier general by Robert E. Lee. Serving with distinction in prominent battles such as those at Bull Run, Chancellorsville and Harpers Ferry, this lawyer-turned-general earned not only the respect of his superiors but the esteem and admiration of his men. Imprisoned first at Fort Delaware and then at Johnson's Island, Archer was one of the "First Fifty" (and as it turned out only) officers to be part of a Confederate/Union prisoner exchange. Upon returning to the Confederacy, Archer resumed command and served until his death from battle wounds in October 1864. From doctors to lawyers and privates to generals, this volume records the stories of a few special people such as General James Archer who chose to serve their country during the Civil War. Twenty-four individuals from both sides of the Mason-Dixon line are remembered for their extraordinary and often little known contributions to the Confederate and Union causes. These include Colonel Thomas Rose, who was in charge of the Libby Prison tunnel; Colonel John R. Winston, who was one of the few to escape from the Federal prison on Johnson's Island; Sally Tompkins, who ran a private hospital in Richmond; and Sergeant Richard Kirkland, who risked his life to take water to the Federal troops at Fredericksburg. Other featured individuals include Susie Baker King Taylor, Colonel Hector McKethan, Dr. Mary Walker and Richard Thomas Zarvona. Contemporary sources include a variety of correspondence and diaries from these subjects and those who knew them. Appendices contain a roll of participants in the Great Locomotive Chase; a list of Federal prisoners who escaped through the Libby Prison tunnel; a directory of Confederate officers on board the Maple Leaf; and the history of the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Confederate Roll of Honor. A number of contemporary photographs are also included - Publisher's List Price = $35 - Our Price - $31

Dewberry, Ray - HISTORY OF THE 14TH GEORGIA INFANTRY REGIMENT - Heritage Books - ISBN# 1585499137 - BRAND NEW Softcover - This book covers the period of the U.S. Civil War and provides a detailed combat history of the 14th Georgia Infantry regiment of Lee's army. The story is constructed around quotations from letters written home from soldiers of Company A of this regiment to summarize the actions of the 14th Georgia in the complete period of fighting from the days immediately following 1st Manassas right up through the end at Appomattox Courthouse. The story was initiated to provide a history of this regiment to the descendents of one of its veterans-Private Aaron Jackson Dewberry of Monroe, Georgia. It evolved into a personal story including all of the veterans from Company A in this regiment. The narrative includes an individual accounting of each of the 119 veterans of the company and will be of especial interest to all of their descendents. The narrative and action is placed in the Virginia campaigns of Robert E. Lee's army. From the narrative and letters quoted, the reader will be placed at thirteen battlefield sites including detailed action accounts of Chancellorsville, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, and Appomattox. Confederate descendents of the veterans of Company A of the 14th Georgia Regiment will find this a stirring accounting of their ancestor's experiences - Publisher's List Price = $17.50 - Our Price - $16.95

Driscoll, John K. - THE CIVIL WAR ON PENSACOLA BAY 1861-1862 - McFarland Pub - ISBN# 9780786431755 - BRAND NEW Laminated Hardcover - 234pp - Photos - Notes - Biblio - Index - In 1845, sparsely populated Florida had been admitted to the United States along with Iowa in an ill-fated attempt to keep the balance between slave and free states and ultimately avert the civil war that many felt was on the horizon. With the 1861 beginning of hostilities, Florida's Pensacola Bay area with its magnificent harbor, valuable navy yard and impressive fortifications became hotly contested by Union and Confederate forces. While Pensacola's lack of navigable rivers and limited rail access had kept it from developing into one of the country's major commercial centers, its location provided the perfect base for hostile strikes on nearby Mobile and New Orleans. Focusing on the town of Pensacola and the small residential villages of Warrington and Woolsey, this volume details the events which took place in and around Pensacola Bay immediately before and in the early months of the Civil War. It takes a look at the various people involved and how their personalities and attributes came into play and shaped the course of events. The work presents happenings from a contemporary viewpoint rather than how they were reported and retold at a later time. More than 70 period photographs and illustrations complete the depiction of events. - Publisher's List Price = $55 - Our Price - $51

Driver Jr., Robert J. - CONFEDERATE SAILORS, MARINES AND SIGNALMEN FROM VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND - Willow Bend Publishing - ISBN# 9780788442797 - BRAND NEW Softcover - 506pp - alphabetical listings of men from Virginia and Maryland who served as: Confederate Naval officers and sailors; Confederate Marine Corps officers and enlisted men; and Confederate Signal Corps officers, signalmen and telegraph operators. The amount of data included in individual entries varies greatly. In addition to the name, any combination of the following may be included: rank and division, date and/or place of birth, date and/or place of death, place of burial, occupation, residence, date and place of enlistment, date and/or place of discharge, physical description, and much more. A wealth of vintage photographs and a bibliography enhance the text. The officers and men who served in these sister services played an important role in the War Between the States. Maryland and Virginia officers serving in the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and the midshipmen attending the United States Naval Academy, resigned almost in mass and volunteered in their Confederate counterparts. Without a doubt the Confederacy received many of the brightest and best officers in the United States service. Marylander commanded the Signal Corps, and his staff was from both states. Most of the officers and men who served in the First and Second Companies, Independent Signal Corps, were from Virginia. The Secret Service fell under nominal command of Colonel Norris of the Signal Corps. However, the operatives were not regularly enrolled or paid, and they are, therefore, difficult to identify. Some were paid directly by the Confederate Treasury Department. The records of their service are sketchy, but some postwar accounts do exist. They and the telegraphers are added, but many who served in this capacity have not been identified - Publisher's List Price = $39.50 each - Our Price - $36.95
