(McGee) Fox, Thomas - DRUMMER BOY WILLIE MCGEE, CIVIL WAR HERO AND FRAUD- McFarland Pub - ISBN# 9780786432899 - BRAND NEW Laminated Softcover - Foreword by Joseph Bilby - 267pp - Notes - Biblio - Index - Photos - On December 7, 1864, just one week after the bloody battle of Franklin, Tennessee, William McGee, a drummer boy from Newark, New Jersey, was credited with leading a Federal force to a decisive victory over the Confederates in a clash just thirty miles from the carnage at Franklin. This 15-year-old Irish-American, on convalescent duty and acting as an orderly to General Lovell Rousseau, was recognized for the capture of two guns, several hundred prisoners, and the saving of Fortress Rosecrans in Murfreesboro from the famed Nathan Bedford Forrest. For his actions, young McGee would soon be awarded a Medal of Honor, written up in newspapers and books as a glorious New Jersey legend, be commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Army at age 18, and then, inexplicably at the height of his notoriety, virtually disappear from history for more than 100 years. This is the story of a lost war hero, a man-child with the world at his feet, whose fall from grace is accelerated by fame, lies, alcohol, bigamy, and murder - Publisher's List Price = $35 - Our Price - $31

His division saw bloody action at Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, Atlanta, Allatoona, Franklin and Nashville, all graphically detailed in this book. Confederate Gen. Stephen D. Goc, Michael J. - HERO OF THE RED RIVER: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF JOSEPH BAILEY - New Past Press -BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 320pp - Index - Biblio - Notes - Photos - Major General Nathaniel P Banks, Union commander of the Red River military expedition, found himself in a particularly tight situation in April of 1864. He had been defeated at the Battle of Mansfield while attempting to capture Shreveport, Louisiana, and now he was retreating down the Red River, harassed by Confederate troops at every turn. Throughout the campaign, the river's low water level had been a constant problem to his naval support of gunboats under the command of Rear Admiral David D. Porter. Now, Banks and Porter discovered that the river was so low that the gunboats were trapped above the rapids at Alexandria. To save the flotilla, Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Bailey suggested that the river could be dammed to raise the water level and f1oat the gunboats over the shallow rapids. Despite the doubts and jeers of many, Banks authorized Bailey to begin construction. Through the next two weeks, troops struggled to build the dam which eventually made it possible for the fleet to escape. - $25 Make payments

(Rivals) Goodwin, Doris Kearns - TEAM OF RIVALS : THE POLITICAL GENIUS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN -Simon & Schuster - ISBN# 0684824906 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 916pp - Index - Notes - Acclaimed historian Doris Kearns Goodwin illuminates Lincoln's political genius in this highly original work, as the one-term congressman and prairie lawyer rises from obscurity to prevail over three gifted rivals of national reputation to become president. On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war. That Lincoln succeeded, Goodwin demonstrates, was the result of a character that had been forged by experiences that raised him above his more privileged and accomplished rivals. He won because he possessed an extraordinary ability to put himself in the place of other men, to experience what they were feeling, to understand their motives and desires. It was this capacity that enabled Lincoln as president to bring his disgruntled opponents together, create the most unusual cabinet in history, and marshal their talents to the task of preserving the Union and winning the war - Publisher's List Price = $35 - Our Price - $27.99

(GettysburgMaps) Gottfried, Bradley M. - THE MAPS OF GETTYSBURG: AN ATLAS OF THE GETTYSBURG CAMPAIGN, JUNE 3 - JULY 13, 1863 - Savas-Beatie - ISBN# 1932714308 -BRAND NEW Oversized 7 x 10 Hardcover in Dust Jacket (Protected in a New Brodart Dust Jacket Protector) - 1st Edition Printing - 363pp - Notes - Bibliography - Index - 144 Full-Page Maps - More academic and photographic accounts on the battle of Gettysburg exist than for all other battles of the Civil War combined and for good reason. The three days of maneuver, attack, and counterattack consisted of scores of encounters, from corps-size actions to small unit engagements. Despite all its coverage, Gettysburg remains one of the most complex and difficult to understand battles of the war. The Maps Gettysburg: The Atlas of the Gettysburg Campaign, June 3 July 13, 1863, by Bradley Gottfried offers a unique approach to the study of this multifaceted engagement. The Maps of Gettysburg plows new ground in the study of the campaign by breaking down the entire campaign in 146 detailed full page original maps. These cartographic creations bore down to the regimental level, offering students of the campaign a unique and fascinating approach to studying what may have been the climactic battle of the war. The Maps of Gettysburg offers thirty-one "action-sections" comprising the entire campaign. These include the march to and from the battlefield and virtually every significant event in between. Gottfried's original maps enrich each map section. Keyed to each piece of cartography is detailed text about the units, personnel, movements, and combat (including quotes from eyewitnesses) that make the Gettysburg story come alive. This presentation allows readers to easily and quickly find a map and text on virtually any portion of the campaign, from opening movements of the armies in early June to the last Confederate withdrawal of troops across the Potomac River on July 13, 1863. Serious students of the battle will appreciate the extensive endnotes and will want to take this book with them on their trips to the battlefield - Publisher's List Price = $39.95 - Our Price - $34.95

(Texas) Grear, Charles D. - THE FATE OF TEXAS : THE CIVIL WAR AND THE LONE STAR STATE- Univ Arkansas Press - ISBN# 1557288836 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 272pp - Notes - Biblio - Index - Photos - Illustrations - In its examination of a state too often neglected by Civil War historians, The Fate of Texas presents Texas as a decidedly Southern, yet in many ways unusual, state seriously committed to and deeply affected by the Confederate war effort in a multitude of ways. When the state joined the Confederacy and fought in the war, its fate was uncertain. The war touched every portion of the population and all aspects of life in Texas. Never before has a group of historians examined the impact of the war on so many facets of the state. The eleven essays in this collection present cutting edge, original research by noted historians, who provide a new understanding of the role and reactions of Texas and Texans to the war. The book covers a wide range of topics, providing new perspectives, ranging from military, social, and cultural history to public history and historical memory. Some of the subjects explored include the lives of Texas women, slavery, veterans, and how the state dealt with Confederate loss. The contributors are Joseph G. Dawson, Richard Lowe, Charles D. Grear, Richard B. McCaslin, Angela Boswell, Dale Baum, Walter D. Kamphoefner, Randolph B. Campbell, Carl H. Moneyhon, Alexander Mendoza, and Julie Holcomb - Publisher's List Price = $37.50 - Our Price - $31.99
