He was privileged to obtain schooling and, after service in the war with Mexico, attended West Point. Relying heavily on detailed journals kept by Kautz for 43 years, this biography covers his early experiences and his time in the turbulent Pacific Northwest, where he was involved in Indian affairs and the Rogue River War. As with so many American military men of the time, however, the defining event in his career was the Civil War. Originally assigned to the Western Theater, where he played a role in the capture of Morgan's Raiders, Kautz's service included participation in the First Battle of Deep Bottom, the Wilson-Kautz Raid, and the Petersburg assault aimed at capturing Richmond. Kautz has often been misrepresented in historical mentions and this biography seeks to set the record straight. Period photographs and a number of maps are included.- Publisher's List Price = $55 - Our Price - $51

Examining South Carolina's diverse population of African-American slaveowners, the book demonstrates that free African Americans widely embraced slavery as a viable economic system and that they--like their white counterparts--exploited the labor of slaves on their farms and in their businesses. Drawing on the federal census, wills, mortgage bills of sale, tax returns, and newspaper advertisements, the author reveals the nature of African-American slaveholding, its complexity, and its rationales. He describes how some African-American slave masters had earned their freedom but how many others--primarily mulattoes born of free parents--were unfamiliar with slavery's dehumanization - Publisher's List Price = $25 - Our Price - $22

The author has used letters, diary entries, and remembrances, much of it previously unpublished, to offer the reader a view of the war as the men in the ranks saw it. At Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Petersburg, and many more battles, the "Orange Blossoms" earned a reputation for sacrifice and bravery--eloquently put into words by Private Henry Howell: As he lay wounded, he described the charge that broke the Confederate line at Spotsylvania--"everyone was borne irresistibly forward. There was no such thing as fail." The book has a roster of all who served in the regiment and numerous photos of individuals.- Publisher's List Price = $45 - Our Price - $42

(CWTenn) Lepa, Jack H. - THE CIVIL WAR IN TENNESSEE 1862-1863 - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786429783 - BRAND NEW Laminated Hardcover - 233pp - Photos - Index - Maps - Photos - Biblio - In 1862, with the outcome of the Civil War far from certain, Union and Confederate leaders began to pinpoint locations vital for their army's success. Tennessee was one such possession. Although nominally under Confederate control, with Union loyalists in the east, Confederate supporters in the west and a mixture in the central region, the state did not have ironclad loyalty to either cause. For the Union, gaining control of Tennessee meant crippling the transportation options of the Confederacy, giving Union forces access to the rivers and mountain passes which would potentially lead them to the heart of the Confederacy and victory over the South. For the Confederacy, maintaining control of Tennessee was vital not only to protect its southernmost states but also to retain control of the state's agricultural products and mineral wealth, neither of which it could afford to lose. Drawing on contemporary sources such as memoirs and official correspondence, this volume details the struggle for control of Tennessee during 1862 and 1863. Beginning with the Union commanders' initial reluctance to challenge the Confederate army, it describes the fortuitous momentum Ulysses S. Grant's arrival added to the Federal struggle in the west and, consequently, the Union quest for Tennessee. It follows the movements of Union and Confederate forces through some of the worst battles of the war, including Shiloh, Stones River and Chickamauga. Finally, the Union victory at the battle of Chattanooga which brought Tennessee definitively under Union control and its consequences for both sides are discussed in detail. - Publisher's List Price = $49.95 - Our Price - $47

Lepa, Jack H. - THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY CAMPAIGN IN 1864 - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786445837 - BRAND NEW Full-Sized Laminated Softcover - 252pp - Index - Biblio - Photos - A significant part of the Civil War was fought in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, especially in 1864. Books and articles have been written about the fighting that took place there, but they generally cover only a small period of time and focus on a particular battle or campaign. This work covers the entire year of 1864 so that readers can clearly see how one event led to another in the Shenandoah Valley and turned once-peaceful garden spots into gory battlefields. It tells the stories of the great leaders, ordinary men, innocent civilians, and armies large and small taking part in battles at New Market, Chambersburg, Winchester, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek, but it primarily tells the stories of the soldiers, Union and Confederate, who were willing to risk their lives for their beliefs. The author has made extensive use of memoirs, letters and reports written by the soldiers of both sides who fought in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864 - Publisher's List Price = $39.95 - Our Price - $36.95

" Levinson, David / Piper, Emilie - ON THE OTHER SIDE OF GLORY - THE BERKSHIRE MEN OF THE 54TH MASSACHUSETTS INFANTRY REGIMENT - Housatonic Heritage - ISBN #9780984549214 -BRAND NEW Softcover - 1st edition - 194pp - Maps - Photos - Illustrated - Index - Biblio - Biographical Profiles - stories of the African American men from western Massachusetts and northwestern Connecticut who chose to serve in the famous "Glory" regiment during the Civil War. The bravery of the men in their assault on Fort Wagner, South Carolina, on July 18, 1863, made it possible for tens of thousands of other African American men to join the fight to end slavery and win equality. The heroism of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry is well known. Yet these men as individuals are long forgotten. For first time, the stories of these farmers, barbers, carriage drivers, entrepreneurs, and blacksmiths are made known. Moving from the farms of the Berkshires to the battlefields of the South, On the Other Side of Glory then returns to the North to explore how the war changed African American life in western New England. The authors describe how the wartime experience and full citizenship empowered the veterans and their neighbors to form new Black neighborhoods and communities in their towns and cities, build new churches, and honor their own heroes. But the book also details the other side of glory. Their brave service and sacrifices did not bring the promised equality. The discrimination that defined African American white relations before the war persisted during the war and continued after the men came home - $24

One man saved George Armstrong Custer's life, three died at Gettysburg, two were prisoners of war. One was a doctor, another a bugler, and another raised a company of cavalry troops and died leading them into battle with Gen. Custer. Some lived to old age and five brothers served together. Liddell, St. John Richardson- LIDELL'S RECORD - LSU Press - BRAND NEW Softcover - 218pp - Illustrated - Edited by Nathaniel Hughes Jr - St. John Richardson Liddell (1815 1870), a conspicuous combat leader in the Army of Tennessee, was an important eyewitness to the making of history. A prominent Louisiana planter, he also served on the staffs of P.G.T. Beauregard, William J. Hardee, and Albert Sidney Johnston during the conflict and traveled in the upper circles of the Confederate military and political high command. In 1866, disillusioned and embittered by defeat, Liddell penned his memoirs for his sons. (Siege) Lockwood, John / Lockwood, Charles - THE SIEGE OF WASHINGTON : THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE TWELVE DAYS THAT SHOOK THE UNION - Oxford Univ Press - ISBN# 0199759898 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 320pp - On April 14, 1861, following the surrender of Fort Sumter, Washington was "put into the condition of a siege," declared Abraham Lincoln. Located sixty miles south of the Mason-Dixon Line, the nation's capital was surrounded by the slave states of Maryland and Virginia. With no fortifications and only a handful of trained soldiers, Washington was an ideal target for the Confederacy. The South echoed with cries of "On to Washington!" and Jefferson Davis's wife sent out cards inviting her friends to a reception at the White House on May 1. Lincoln issued an emergency proclamation on April 15, calling for 75,000 troops to suppress the rebellion and protect the capital. One question now transfixed the nation: whose forces would reach Washington first-Northern defenders or Southern attackers? For 12 days, the city's fate hung in the balance. Washington was entirely isolated from the North-without trains, telegraph, or mail. Sandbags were stacked around major landmarks, and the unfinished Capitol was transformed into a barracks, with volunteer troops camping out in the House and Senate chambers. Meanwhile, Maryland secessionists blocked the passage of Union reinforcements trying to reach Washington, and a rumored force of 20,000 Confederate soldiers lay in wait just across the Potomac River. Drawing on firsthand accounts, The Siege of Washington tells this story from the perspective of leading officials, residents trapped inside the city, Confederates plotting to seize it, and Union troops racing to save it, capturing with brilliance and immediacy the precarious first days of the Civil War. - Publisher's List Price = $27.95 - Our Price - $21.50

(George Crook) Magid, Paul - GEORGE CROOK : FROM THE REDWOODS TO APPOMATTOX - Univ Oklahoma Press - ISBN# 9780806142074 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 408pp - Illustrated - Maps - A new assessment of the frontier army commander, focusing on his early career - Renowned for his prominent role in the Apache and Sioux wars, General George Crook (1828 90) was considered by William Tecumseh Sherman to be his greatest Indian-fighting general. Although Crook was feared by Indian opponents on the battlefield, in defeat the tribes found him a true friend and advocate who earned their trust and friendship when he spoke out in their defense against political corruption and greed. Paul Magid's detailed and engaging narrative focuses on Crook's early years through the end of the Civil War. Magid begins with Crook's boyhood on the Ohio frontier and his education at West Point, then recounts his nine years' military service in California during the height of the Gold Rush. It was in the Far West that Crook acquired the experience and skills essential to his success as an Indian fighter. This is primarily an account of Crook's dramatic and sometimes controversial role in the Civil War, in which he was involved on three fronts, in West Virginia, Tennessee, and Virginia. Crook saw action during the battle of Antietam and played important roles in two major offensives in the Shenandoah Valley and in the Chattanooga and Appomattox campaigns. His courage, leadership, and tactical skills won him the respect and admiration of his commanding officers, including Generals Grant and Sheridan. He soon rose to the rank of major general and received four brevet promotions for bravery and meritorious service. Along the way, he led both infantry and cavalry, pioneered innovations in guerrilla warfare, conducted raids deep into enemy territory, and endured a kidnapping by Confederate partisans. George Crook offers insight into the influences that later would make this general both a nemesis of the Indian tribes and their ardent advocate, and it illuminates the personality of this most enigmatic and eccentric of army officers - Publisher's List Price = $39.95 - Our Price - $36.95

After service in Maryland guarding railroads, the men sailed to the Gulf of Mexico to join Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler's expedition to capture the South's most important city: New Orleans. From August 1862 to July 1863, the 4th Wisconsin participated as infantry or mounted infantry in a series of bloody battles in Louisiana, including Baton Rouge, Bisland, the siege of Port Hudson, and Clinton. With a desperate need for mounted troops, the Badgers were officially changed to cavalry in September 1863 and became the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry. As troopers, they took part in four mounted expeditions across Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, serving under such notable generals as Albert Lee, John Davidson, and Benjamin Grierson. The Confederate armies surrendered in the spring of 1865, but the 4th Wisconsin Cavalry joined Maj. Gen. Wesley Merritt's cavalry division that July on its ride from Louisiana intoTexas, where the regiment was broken up and deployed in various outposts along the Rio Grande River. On May 28, 1866, Wisconsin's last regiment of Civil War volunteers was finally mustered out at Brownsville, Texas. Unfortunately, many of the men would not be going home: 431 had lost their lives to enemy bullets and disease - $34.95

Historians have denigrated Bragg by accepting without challenge the self-serving accusations of prominent, disgruntled subordinates, each of whom sought to explain their own failures by assigning them to Bragg. This biography, without dodging Bragg's deficiencies, refutes much of this false testimony. The result is a balanced view of this controversial general, from his early rise to power in the Western theater to his subsequent fall from grace in the latter years of the Civil War - Publisher's List Price = $55 - Our Price - $52.95

Marvel, William - RACE OF THE SOIL: THE NINTH NEW HAMPSHIRE REGIMENT IN THE CIVIL WAR - Broadfoot 1988 -BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket (Protected in New Brodart DJ Cover) - 536pp - Index - Photos - Maps - The 9th NH fought at Fredericksburg, Petersburg, Antietam, South Mountain, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Antietam and other major battles - Noted for storming the Stone Bridge at Antietam and the heights at Fredericksburg, it was one of the first to enter the Crater at Petersburg - Based of primary sources, including the service records of individual soldiers, and the letters and diaries of the men. The Ninth New Hampshire Infantry Regiment was recruited in the summer of 1862 in response to an urgent call by the United States for 300,000 additional men. The call was precipitated by the repulse of McClellan nearing Richmond on the Virginia peninsula and the lack of advance by the principal Union Army in the West. The Ninth New Hampshire, destined to be listed among the "Three Hundred Fighting Regiments" in Fox's Regimental Losses, departed New Hampshire on August 25, 1862. Less than 20 days later the green, untested regiment, a member of the IX Corps, found itself in the engagement at South Mountain, Maryland. On September 17 it participated in the bloody battle of Antietam. As a result, during its first month of active service, the Ninth lost more than 300 men to infectious diseases and battle casualties. The IX Corps including the Ninth New Hampshire led the way on the march south from Maryland into Virginia to join Burnside's army of over 125,000 men to take part in the battle of Fredericksburg (December 13). Again, the larger Federal Army was defeated by Lee's smaller army, which inflicted some 12,000 casualties on the Federals, the Ninth New Hampshire receiving its share. In March, 1863 the regiment was transferred to the Western theater, first to Kentucky and then to Mississippi, to participate in the Jackson Campaign. While there, and on the return journey to Kentucky, the regiment was almost decimated by disease. After several months stay in Kentucky and around Knoxville, it joined Grant's army for the Wilderness Campaign of 1864 in Virginia. The Ninth New Hampshire embarked on May 4, 1864 from Bristoe Station for the bloody Overland Campaign. At Spotsylvania Courthouse (May 12), especially at the Bloody Angle, it took heavy casualties. The regiment was not engaged at the deadly battle of Cold Harbor, but was actively involved at the Crater at Petersburg again sustaining serious losses. Three weeks after the battle of the Crater there were only ten officers and barely 90 men on duty in the entire regiment. Nevertheless, the Ninth New Hampshire was an active participant in the battle of Peeble's Farm (September 30), where it sustained heavy losses. It was the third time in less than five months that the regiment had lost as much as 40% of its effective force in a single fight, and this time it was nearly 60%. By Appomattox the Ninth New Hampshire was a proud but sadly depleted regiment. Race of the Soil is based on primary sources including the service records of individual soldiers, and the letters and diaries of the men. The author brings many human interest stories to the narrative. Integrated with the battle narrative are the personal stories of members of the regiment. When the Ninth New Hampshire was initially organized, Marvel tells us something about the men who joined it and the communities from which they came - South Conway, Exeter, Manchester, Lempster, Meriden, Keene, Nelson, and others. The names of many of these men recur thoughout the narrative whether in descriptions of a typical day in camp for the regiment or on the march or in battle. The author relates many personal accounts, such as the wounding of 26-year-old George Allen at the engagement at Bethesda Church on June 22, 1864. We follow him through his removal from the battlefield to various hospitals and finally back to New Hampshire. We learn about Corporal Peter Morrison; he was the last member of the regiment to fall to enemy fire and this occurred October 5, 1864 - $39.95

Not daring to keep a diary that might fall into enemy hands, McAllister wrote daily to his wife and daughters, providing an intricately detailed description of his wartime ordeal for posterity. (Flames) Mingus, Scott - FLAMES BEYOND GETTYSBURG: THE CONFEDERATE EXPEDITION TO THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVER, JUNE 1863 - Savas Beatie - ISBN# 9781611210729 - BRAND NEW Softcover - 396pp - Revised and rewritten with over 10,000 added words and maps - One of the most strategically important parts of the 1863 Gettysburg Campaign today is virtually unknown to the modern battlefield tramper. In late June, Confederate Brig. Gen. John B. Gordon led a vital expedition through south-central Pennsylvania with a goal of seizing the mile-long Colombia-Wrightsville Bridge over the Susquehanna River. Along the way, Gordon had to deal with hastily recruited and barely trained state emergency militia whose mission was to delay the Rebels for as long as possible and then deny them the use of the river crossing. This book offers the most detailed examination of the Gordon's mission. Chapters include a treatise on the first fighting at Gettysburg (a series of skirmishes on June 26), the subsequent cavalry raid on Hanover Junction, Gordon's triumphal Sunday parade through York, and the skirmish at Wrightsville that doomed the Gordon expedition to failure. The book includes several detailed driving tours and a complete order of battle for both Gordon's Georgians and the Pennsylvanians who opposed them. - Publisher's List Price = $18.95 - Our Price - $16.95

Even if an escapee managed to avoid the more violent residents, he was hard-pressed to manage survival on the drought and illness-prone frontier, where newly settled sympathizers could rarely give accurate descriptions of the topography, climate, or food sources. This book details the history and development of the Underground Railroad in Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Topics include: lesser known escape routes into Mexico and the American Indian nations, the sacking of Lawrence and its role in upping guerilla warfare; escapees' use of steamboats along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers; and the activities of John Brown, James Montgomery, Dan Anthony, and others- Publisher's List Price = $55 - Our Price - $51

(77thNY) Morrow Jr, Robert F. - 77TH NEW YORK VOLUNTEERS : 'SOJERING' IN THE VI CORPS- White Mane -BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 273pp - The 77th New York or Bemis Heights Regiment was probably the only Civil War unit to be numbered for sentimental reasons. Organized by Congressman James McKean, they were recruited from Essex, Fulton, and primarily Saratoga Counties. Leaving home on Thanksgiving Day in 1861, the first action for boys from Bemis Heights was in the Peninsular Campaign. Assigned to the Third Brigade of the Second Division along with the infamous Vermont Brigade, their division, part of the VI Corps, was the best in the army. The regiment captured two cannons in the second battle of Fredericksburg. At the Wilderness, Brigadier General John B. Gordon's assault stopped when it reached the 77th's brigade. At Spotsylvania the 77th was picked as one of the best units to participate in Upton's Charge, and this list continues on through the entire war. Extensively researched, the pages of the book are filled with firsthand accounts. During the bloodiest war in America's history, bonds formed when these men touched elbows with one another in over 50 battles. Drinking from the same canteen and smoking from the same pouch produced ties that were strong enough to keep them coming back for 50 annual reunions - Publisher's List Price = $29.95 - Our Price - $27.95

One of Weld's most significant accomplishments was the recruitment of a group of key abolitionist agents, known as the "Seventy," who worked to expand the reach of abolitionist thought and action and enlisted new members into the movement. This volume chronicles the founding, development, and mission of the American Anti-Slavery Society, the contributions of Weld, and the crusading efforts of the agents he assembled.
