(Kautz) Kautz, Lawrence G. - AUGUST VALENTINE KAUTZ, USA - BIOGRAPHY OF A CIVIL WAR GENERAL- McFarland Pub - ISBN# 9780786433230 - BRAND NEW Laminated Hardcover - 295pp - Photos - Maps - Notes - Biblio - Index - Born in Germany in 1828, future Union general August Valentine Kautz came to America as an infant. He was privileged to obtain schooling and, after service in the war with Mexico, attended West Point. Relying heavily on detailed journals kept by Kautz for 43 years, this biography covers his early experiences and his time in the turbulent Pacific Northwest, where he was involved in Indian affairs and the Rogue River War. As with so many American military men of the time, however, the defining event in his career was the Civil War. Originally assigned to the Western Theater, where he played a role in the capture of Morgan's Raiders, Kautz's service included participation in the First Battle of Deep Bottom, the Wilson-Kautz Raid, and the Petersburg assault aimed at capturing Richmond. Kautz has often been misrepresented in historical mentions and this biography seeks to set the record straight. Period photographs and a number of maps are included.- Publisher's List Price = $55 - Our Price - $51

(Black Slaveowners) Larry Koger - BLACK SLAVEOWNERS: FREE BLACK SLAVE MASTERS IN SOUTH CAROLINA, 1790-1860 - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786469314 - BRAND NEW Full-Sized Laminated Softcover - 300pp - references, appendices, notes, index - Most Americans, both black and white, believe that slavery was a system maintained by whites to exploit blacks, but this authoritative study reveals the extent to which African Americans played a significant role as slave masters. Examining South Carolina's diverse population of African-American slaveowners, the book demonstrates that free African Americans widely embraced slavery as a viable economic system and that they--like their white counterparts--exploited the labor of slaves on their farms and in their businesses. Drawing on the federal census, wills, mortgage bills of sale, tax returns, and newspaper advertisements, the author reveals the nature of African-American slaveholding, its complexity, and its rationales. He describes how some African-American slave masters had earned their freedom but how many others--primarily mulattoes born of free parents--were unfamiliar with slavery's dehumanization - Publisher's List Price = $25 - Our Price - $22

At Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Petersburg, and many more battles, the "Orange Blossoms" earned a reputation for sacrifice and bravery--eloquently put into words by Private Henry Howell: As he lay wounded, he described the charge that broke the Confederate line at Spotsylvania--"everyone was borne irresistibly forward. (CWTenn) Lepa, Jack H. - THE CIVIL WAR IN TENNESSEE 1862-1863 - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786429783 - BRAND NEW Laminated Hardcover - 233pp - Photos - Index - Maps - Photos - Biblio - In 1862, with the outcome of the Civil War far from certain, Union and Confederate leaders began to pinpoint locations vital for their army's success. Tennessee was one such possession. Although nominally under Confederate control, with Union loyalists in the east, Confederate supporters in the west and a mixture in the central region, the state did not have ironclad loyalty to either cause. For the Union, gaining control of Tennessee meant crippling the transportation options of the Confederacy, giving Union forces access to the rivers and mountain passes which would potentially lead them to the heart of the Confederacy and victory over the South. For the Confederacy, maintaining control of Tennessee was vital not only to protect its southernmost states but also to retain control of the state's agricultural products and mineral wealth, neither of which it could afford to lose. Drawing on contemporary sources such as memoirs and official correspondence, this volume details the struggle for control of Tennessee during 1862 and 1863. Beginning with the Union commanders' initial reluctance to challenge the Confederate army, it describes the fortuitous momentum Ulysses S. Grant's arrival added to the Federal struggle in the west and, consequently, the Union quest for Tennessee. It follows the movements of Union and Confederate forces through some of the worst battles of the war, including Shiloh, Stones River and Chickamauga. Finally, the Union victory at the battle of Chattanooga which brought Tennessee definitively under Union control and its consequences for both sides are discussed in detail. - Publisher's List Price = $49.95 - Our Price - $47

Lepa, Jack H. - THE SHENANDOAH VALLEY CAMPAIGN IN 1864 - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786445837 - BRAND NEW Full-Sized Laminated Softcover - 252pp - Index - Biblio - Photos - A significant part of the Civil War was fought in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, especially in 1864. Books and articles have been written about the fighting that took place there, but they generally cover only a small period of time and focus on a particular battle or campaign. This work covers the entire year of 1864 so that readers can clearly see how one event led to another in the Shenandoah Valley and turned once-peaceful garden spots into gory battlefields. It tells the stories of the great leaders, ordinary men, innocent civilians, and armies large and small taking part in battles at New Market, Chambersburg, Winchester, Fisher's Hill and Cedar Creek, but it primarily tells the stories of the soldiers, Union and Confederate, who were willing to risk their lives for their beliefs. The author has made extensive use of memoirs, letters and reports written by the soldiers of both sides who fought in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864 - Publisher's List Price = $39.95 - Our Price - $36.95

(George Crook) Magid, Paul - GEORGE CROOK : FROM THE REDWOODS TO APPOMATTOX - Univ Oklahoma Press - BRAND NEW Softcover - 408pp - Illustrated - Maps - A new assessment of the frontier army commander, focusing on his early career - Renowned for his prominent role in the Apache and Sioux wars, General George Crook (1828 90) was considered by William Tecumseh Sherman to be his greatest Indian-fighting general. Although Crook was feared by Indian opponents on the battlefield, in defeat the tribes found him a true friend and advocate who earned their trust and friendship when he spoke out in their defense against political corruption and greed. Paul Magid's detailed and engaging narrative focuses on Crook's early years through the end of the Civil War. Magid begins with Crook's boyhood on the Ohio frontier and his education at West Point, then recounts his nine years' military service in California during the height of the Gold Rush. It was in the Far West that Crook acquired the experience and skills essential to his success as an Indian fighter. This is primarily an account of Crook's dramatic and sometimes controversial role in the Civil War, in which he was involved on three fronts, in West Virginia, Tennessee, and Virginia. Crook saw action during the battle of Antietam and played important roles in two major offensives in the Shenandoah Valley and in the Chattanooga and Appomattox campaigns. His courage, leadership, and tactical skills won him the respect and admiration of his commanding officers, including Generals Grant and Sheridan. He soon rose to the rank of major general and received four brevet promotions for bravery and meritorious service. Along the way, he led both infantry and cavalry, pioneered innovations in guerrilla warfare, conducted raids deep into enemy territory, and endured a kidnapping by Confederate partisans. George Crook offers insight into the influences that later would make this general both a nemesis of the Indian tribes and their ardent advocate, and it illuminates the personality of this most enigmatic and eccentric of army officers - Publisher's List Price = $24.95 - Our Price - $21.95

This biography, without dodging Bragg's deficiencies, refutes much of this false testimony. Even if an escapee managed to avoid the more violent residents, he was hard-pressed to manage survival on the drought and illness-prone frontier, where newly settled sympathizers could rarely give accurate descriptions of the topography, climate, or food sources. This book details the history and development of the Underground Railroad in Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Topics include: lesser known escape routes into Mexico and the American Indian nations, the sacking of Lawrence and its role in upping guerilla warfare; escapees' use of steamboats along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers; and the activities of John Brown, James Montgomery, Dan Anthony, and others- Publisher's List Price = $55 - Our Price - $51

(77thNY) Morrow Jr, Robert F. - 77TH NEW YORK VOLUNTEERS : 'SOJERING' IN THE VI CORPS- White Mane -BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 273pp - The 77th New York or Bemis Heights Regiment was probably the only Civil War unit to be numbered for sentimental reasons. Organized by Congressman James McKean, they were recruited from Essex, Fulton, and primarily Saratoga Counties. Leaving home on Thanksgiving Day in 1861, the first action for boys from Bemis Heights was in the Peninsular Campaign. Assigned to the Third Brigade of the Second Division along with the infamous Vermont Brigade, their division, part of the VI Corps, was the best in the army. The regiment captured two cannons in the second battle of Fredericksburg. At the Wilderness, Brigadier General John B. Gordon's assault stopped when it reached the 77th's brigade. At Spotsylvania the 77th was picked as one of the best units to participate in Upton's Charge, and this list continues on through the entire war. Extensively researched, the pages of the book are filled with firsthand accounts. During the bloodiest war in America's history, bonds formed when these men touched elbows with one another in over 50 battles. Drinking from the same canteen and smoking from the same pouch produced ties that were strong enough to keep them coming back for 50 annual reunions - Publisher's List Price = $29.95 - Our Price - $27.95
