The commonwealth's largest combat engagement also took an immense toll on the community of Perryville and citizens in surrounding towns. After Confederates achieved a tactical victory, they were nonetheless forced to leave the area. With more than 7,500 casualties, the remaining Union soldiers were unprepared for the enormous tasks of burying the dead, caring for the wounded and rebuilding infrastructure. Instead, this arduous duty fell to the brave and battered locals. Stuart Sanders, former executive director of the Perryville Battlefield Preservation Association, presents the first in-depth look at how the resilient residents dealt with the chaos of this bloody battle and how they rebuilt their town from the rubble left over - Publisher's List Price = $19.99 - Our Price - $16.99

Schafer - CONFEDERATE UNDERWATER WARFARE - AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY- McFarland Pub - ISBN# 9780786473885 - BRAND NEW Full-Sized Laminated Softcover - 212pp - photos, notes, bibliography, index - Though the Union Navy held a numerical advantage over its Confederate counterpart, the South's forces had one weapon that was not readily available to the North--underwater mines, known at the time as torpedoes. More Union ships were destroyed by torpedoes than by all other means combined. The South's superiority in underwater weaponry can be directly traced to an oceanographer named Matthew Fontaine Murray. Recognizing the South's limited capabilities, Murray persuaded its leaders to develop underwater weapons. This is the first detailed history ever of the South's development of both offensive and defensive underwater weaponry. Many photographs of salvaged Confederate mines are included. - Publisher's List Price = $25 - Our Price - $22

Schantz argues that American attitudes and ideas about death helped facilitate the war's tremendous carnage. Asserting that nineteenth-century attitudes toward death were firmly in place before the war began rather than arising from a sense of resignation after the losses became apparent, Schantz has written a fascinating and chilling narrative of how a society understood death and reckoned the magnitude of destruction it was willing to tolerate. Schantz addresses topics such as the pervasiveness of death in the culture of antebellum America; theological discourse and debate on the nature of heaven and the afterlife; the rural cemetery movement and the inheritance of the Greek revival; death as a major topic in American poetry; African American notions of death, slavery, and citizenship; and a treatment of the art of death including memorial lithographs, postmortem photography and Rembrandt Peale's major exhibition painting The Court of Death. - $24.95

Beginning with a brief look at the Filibuster Wars (a set of military attempts to annex Latin American countries into the United States as slave states), the work takes a close look at the men who comprised Wheat's Tigers: Irish immigrant ship hands, New Orleans dock workers and Filibuster veterans. Commanded by one of the greatest antebellum filibusterers, Chatham Roberdeau Wheat, the Tigers quickly distinguished themselves in battle through their almost reckless bravery, proving instrumental in Southern victories at the battles of Front Royal, Winchester and Port Republic. An in-depth look at Battle of Gaines' Mill, in which Wheat's Tigers suffered heavy casualties, including their commander, completes the story. Sarcastic, charming, egotistical, and gracious, he rose quickly from state office to congressman to senator in the decades before the Civil War. Though he sought sectional reconciliation throughout the 1840s and 1850s, he eventually became one of the South's most ardent secessionists. This thorough biography chronicles his days as a student and young lawyer in Georgia, his boisterous political career, his appointment as the Confederacy's first Secretary of State, his unsuccessful stint as a Confederate general, and his role as a proud, unreconstructed rebel after the war. An exploration of Toombs' career reveals the political forces and missteps that drove him--and people like him--to want to secede from the United States - Publisher's List Price = $40 - Our Price - $38

(Shelby) Sellmeyer, Deryl P. - JO SHELBY'S IRON BRIGADE - Pelican Publishing - ISBN# 1589804309 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 381pp - Maps - Photos - Illustrations - Index - Notes - Biblio - Gen. Joseph Orville Shelby's involvement in the Civil War began when he raised a cavalry company for Southern service after refusing a commission in the Federal army. Shelby's company of Rangers became known as the most disciplined company in the pro-Confederate Missouri State Guard. General Shelby's reputation as a fierce commander on the battlefield coexisted with his reputation for acts of compassion toward prisoners of war and innocent civilians. His actions were actuated by his principles, and he permitted no dishonorable act. He was relentless in the punishment of crimes against the weak and helpless, showing regard for all civilians. One example illustrating this occurred prior to the war, when he single-handedly faced down a lynch mob in Lexington, Missouri, to rescue a man who had insisted on his right to vote for Abraham Lincoln at the polls. Shelby's actions set a high standard of courage and honor for his men. While he was not sentimental over fallen comrades, he did not subject his men to dangers that he did not face himself. As a result, the men of Shelby's Brigade idolized him and followed him without question. Every march, camp, and battle that could be identified from reliable source material is incorporated here in this thoroughly researched book. Information was obtained from officers' reports and correspondence from both armies, the National Archives and Records Service, newspapers from that period, articles written by veterans after the war, and the memoirs of Confederate brigadier general M. Jeff Thompson, who temporarily commanded Shelby's Brigade near the end of the war - Publisher's List Price - $29.95 - Our Price - $26.95

(Men of Granite) Shaffer, Duane E. - MEN OF GRANITE : NEW HAMPSHIRE'S SOLDIERS IN THE CIVIL WAR - Univ So Carolina Press - ISBN# 1570037515 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 365pp - During the Civil War, some thirty-five thousand New Hampshire soldiers--representing approximately 11 percent of the state's population--were dispatched to serve the Union in seventeen infantry regiments, two cavalry regiments, three artillery batteries, and three companies of sharpshooters and as members of miscellaneous naval and marine units. Duane E. Shaffer tells the story of these forces in Men of Granite, a thorough history of New Hampshire combat troops in the years before and during the Civil War. Focusing on the day-to-day experiences of the common soldier and his reasons for taking up the fight against the Confederacy, Shaffer has mined myriad primary sources to draw together the experiences of all of the state's regiments and units into this single, cohesive narrative. Told in chronological order, Shaffer's narrative follows the experiences of New Hampshire troops, primarily in Virginia and South Carolina. Granite State soldiers were stationed at Hilton Head for much of the war, and they offered vivid accounts of bivouac duty and of inland raids in lowcountry South Carolina. The soldiers also fought in major battles such as Manassas, Antietam, Gettysburg, and Cold Harbor. A chapter each is devoted to the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862, a fight that included the largest concentration of New Hampshire soldiers in the war, and the Battle of Chancellorsville in May 1863, in which the Twelfth New Hampshire suffered more casualties than any regiment on either side. Shaffer also details the disaster of the Battle of Fort Wagner in July 1863, in which New Hampshire lost more soldiers than in any other operation. He also follows his subjects' return after the war to recount their homecoming and to cement understanding of their sacrifice. Further enhanced by twenty illustrations and twelve maps, Shaffer's detailed survey reinserts the story of New Hampshire forces into the annals of Civil War history and, through frequent quotation of soldiers' own accounts, gives voice to the motivations and daily experiences of determined Union forces from the Granite State - Publisher's List Price = $39.95 - Our Price - $37.99

(Vicksburg) William L. Shea and Terrence Winschel - VICKSBURG IS THE KEY : THE STRUGGLE FOR THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER - Univ Nebraska - BRAND NEW Softcover- 232pp - Notes - Biblio - Index - Photos - Maps - The struggle for control of the Mississippi River was the longest and most complex campaign of the Civil War. It was marked by an extraordinary diversity of military and naval operations, including fleet engagements, cavalry raids, amphibious landings, pitched battles, and the two longest sieges in American history. Every existing type of naval vessel, from sailing ship to armored ram, played a role, and military engineers practiced their art on a scale never before witnessed in modern warfare. Union commanders such as Grant, Sherman, Farragut, and Porter demonstrated the skills that would take them to the highest levels of command. When the immense contest finally reached its climax at Vicksburg and Port Hudson in the summer of 1863, the Confederacy suffered a blow from which it never recovered. Here was the true turning point of the Civil War. This fast-paced, gripping narrative of the Civil War struggle for the Mississippi River is the first comprehensive single-volume account to appear in over a century. Vicksburg Is the Key: The Struggle for the Mississippi River tells the story of the series of campaigns the Union conducted on land and water to conquer Vicksburg and of the many efforts by the Confederates to break the siege of the fortress. William L. Shea and Terrence J. Winschel present the unfolding drama of the campaign in a clear and readable style, correct historic myths along the way, and examine the profound strategic effects of the eventual Union victory. For much of the next year, Federal efforts to capture the citadel focused on possession of that stream. Huge battles and mighty expeditions were launched (Chickasaw Bayou, Yazoo Pass, Steele's Bayou) from that direction, but the city, guarded by stout defenses, swamps, and motivated defenders, could not be turned. Finally, Union troops ran down the Mississippi and came up from the south and the river defenses and the bastion itself were taken from the east. From July 1863 to August 1864, sporadic Confederate resistance necessitated continued Federal attention. This book recounts the whole story.- Publisher's List Price = $55 - Our Price - $49.95

By chronicling perhaps the best of the South's limited opportunities to turn the tide, this provocative study argues that Confederate victory was indeed possible. On June 30, 1862, at a small Virginia crossroads known as Glendale, Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee sliced the retreating Army of the Potomac in two and came remarkably close to destroying their Federal foe. Only a string of command miscues on the part of the Confederates--and a stunning command failure by Stonewall Jackson--enabled the Union army to escape a defeat that day, one that may well have vaulted the South to its independence. Never before or after would the Confederacy come as close to transforming American history as it did at the Battle of Glendale - Publisher's List Price = $35 - Our Price - $33

(CSS Albemarle) Stemple, Jim - THE CSS ALBEMARLE AND WILLIAM CUSHING - THE REMARKABLE CONFEDERATE IRONCLAD AND THE UNION OFFICER WHO SANK IT- McFarland Pub - ISBN# 9780786465293 - BRAND NEW Full-Sized Laminated Softcover - 246pp - 16 photos, notes, bibliography, index - On October 27, 1864, two marvels of the Civil War collided on the Roanoke River near Plymouth, North Carolina. The first was the formidable Confederate ironclad Albemarle, a 376-ton behemoth that had for months roamed the nearby rivers and waters of Albemarle Sound, defeating in turn everything the Federal Navy could throw at it. The second was William B. Cushing, a 21-year-old Federal naval lieutenant who had been selected to lead a virtual suicide mission to destroy the ironclad in her berth. This chronicle of the young officer's "David vs. Goliath" victory over the daunting ironclad presents a tale of courage and accomplishment. - Publisher's List Price = $35 - Our Price - $33

(Richardson) Stentiford, Barry M. - THE RICHARDSON LIGHT GUARD OF WAKEFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS - A TOWN MILITIA IN WAR AND PEACE, 1851-1975 - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786473489 - Brand New Laminated Softcover - 213pp - 44 photos, notes, bibliography, index - This book traces the history of the Richardson Light Guard of Wakefield, Massachusetts, from its origins in 1851 until its end in 1975. What had been an institution of community members and local elites passed to town, then state, and finally federal government. During the same period, Wakefield evolved from an agrarian town to a manufacturing town and finally to a bedroom suburb, ending the practice of a handful of local elites ruling the town unchallenged. Though the rise of the National Guard was generally positive, for some militia companies, inclusion in the National Guard weakened vital bonds with their communities. In the 19th century, the Richardson Light Guard thrived under generous patrons, a supportive town, and a relatively wealthy state government. After becoming part of the National Guard in 1916, the links with its home community steadily weakened, finally breaking during World War II. After the war, the National Guard company had few links to Wakefield and was reorganized out of existence in 1975 - Publisher's List Price = $39.95 - Our Price - $36.95

Sherman on April 26, 1865, this work--in excellent prose and with a keen sense of drama and will, crisis and fate--summarizes the action of the Civil War. In chronological order, are descriptions of each battle--infantry, artillery, and cavalry--and the names of the commanding and other Confederate and Union senior officers. Naval battles in open seas are excluded, although those battles that involved both infantry and naval forces are included. During the next four months the Buckeyes' discipline, courage and endurance were tested as never before, their ranks reduced by 253 casualties - the highest total of any regiment in the 14th Corps, Army of the Cumberland. Recruited in Jefferson, Belmont, Tuscarawas and Van Wert counties, as well as Cincinnati, Cleveland and the state's Western Reserve, the 52nd was led by Colonel Daniel McCook Jr. Soon elevated to brigade command, McCook fought in the Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga and Chattanooga campaigns, although his Ohioans experienced limited combat. When the rough slopes of Kennesaw Mountain were reached in June 1864 the 52nd met the grim face of war head on. In a desperate uphill assault against entrenched Confederates on June 27 at what became known as the "Dead Angle" McCook's brigade was repulsed, losing 35% of its strength. More than 135 Buckeyes were shot down, 45 of them killed or mortally wounded, including McCook. - Brand New - Publisher's List Price = $25 - Our Price - $24

The History of the First Kentucky Brigade, written by Ed Porter Thompson, was a massive undertaking, which began in November 1864, during the final winter of the War, and concluded with the first printing in 1868. In 1898, Thompson revised, updated, and renamed the book History of the Orphan Brigade, resulting in this enormous work. Considered the definitive history of this famous brigade, it provides a thorough background on the formation, staffing, component units, battles, and leadership throughout the War. It takes you from the Kentucky parade grounds in the summer of 1861, to the recruitment and training camps on the Tennessee border, and through the battles at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Baton Rouge, Stones River, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain, and Atlanta. Thompson develops a wonderful history of the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 9th Kentucky Infantry Regiments, as well as detailed accounts of Artillery, Cavalry and other brigade units. - Publisher's List Price = $89.95 - Our Price - $85
