CIVIL WAR MAP BOOKS, CDS AND DVDS

Davis, George B. - ATLAS TO ACCOMPANY THE OFFICIAL RECORDS - From Hearn Pub - BRAND NEW Book on DVD Rom - Originally published in 1891-1895, the collection contains 821 maps, 106 engravings, and 209 drawings. In 1978 Fairfax Press republished the Atlas in a very heavy book 17" x 13" x 2" that weighed about eight pounds and renamed it The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War. The maps were drawn both during and after the Civil War by Union and Confederate engineers, draftsmen, and aided often by the generals themselves. Cartographers later added to the collection to fill voids in the absence of maps accompanying battle reports. The maps are quite detailed, showing troops positions, defense lines, redoubts, fortifications, signal stations, lines of march, landmarks, and topography. Some are still shown as rough sketches, while others are cartographic masterpieces. A plate index is provided to facilitate in locating the maps, and all are available in jpeg high resolution 300 dpi. The entire collection is in public domain and can be copied, published, framed, or retained for research - $29.95
Hotchkiss, Jedediah - THE CIVIL WAR CARTOGRAPHY OF JEDEDIAH HOTCHKISS - From Hearn Pub -BRAND NEW DVD Rom - Jed Hotchkiss, although trained as a botanist, became the Confederacy's most gifted cartographer because he had a rare talent for detail and a civil engineer's aptitude for making accurate measurements with rudimentary surveying instruments. Self taught, he developed cartographic skills through hard work and became an artist as well. A short biography of Hotchkiss's background accompanies the two DVDs comprising his collection. Four famous Confederate generals Robert E. Lee, Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, Richard S. Ewell, and Jubal A. Early would have become puzzled by the topography of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania had it not been for Hotchkiss. Jackson's greatest campaigns occurred when Hotchkiss was with him; his worst campaigns with Hotchkiss away. The collection contains maps made by Hotchkiss during the Civil War, but after training himself as a cartographer, he spent his post-war career as an engineer and surveyor. Several of those maps form part of this collection, which contains 332 sketches that include finely detailed maps in color all on two DVDs in downloadable jpeg format and in 300 dpi high resolution - $42.50

The three days of maneuver, attack, and counterattack consisted of scores of encounters, from corps-size actions to small unit engagements. Despite all its coverage, Gettysburg remains one of the most complex and difficult to understand battles of the war. The Maps Gettysburg: The Atlas of the Gettysburg Campaign, June 3 July 13, 1863, by Bradley Gottfried offers a unique approach to the study of this multifaceted engagement. The Maps of Gettysburg plows new ground in the study of the campaign by breaking down the entire campaign in 146 detailed full page original maps. These cartographic creations bore down to the regimental level, offering students of the campaign a unique and fascinating approach to studying what may have been the climactic battle of the war. The Maps of Gettysburg offers thirty-one "action-sections" comprising the entire campaign. These include the march to and from the battlefield and virtually every significant event in between. Gottfried's original maps enrich each map section. Keyed to each piece of cartography is detailed text about the units, personnel, movements, and combat (including quotes from eyewitnesses) that make the Gettysburg story come alive. This presentation allows readers to easily and quickly find a map and text on virtually any portion of the campaign, from opening movements of the armies in early June to the last Confederate withdrawal of troops across the Potomac River on July 13, 1863. Serious students of the battle will appreciate the extensive endnotes and will want to take this book with them on their trips to the battlefield - Publisher's List Price = $39.95 - Our Price - $34.95
