He arrived in Vietnam in April 1968. Serving as both pointman and sniper, he experienced six weeks of frontline duty, averaging a firefight each week with heavy casualties. With his advanced degree and a $2.50 case of beer for a bribe, he then transferred to the 19th Military History Detachment and spent the remainder of his tour of duty traveling the Mekong Delta, Plain of Reeds, and areas near Saigon. (100 Missions) Barnes, H. Lee - When We Walked Above the Clouds : A Memoir of Vietnam- Univ of Nebraska Pr - ISBN# 9780803264809 - BRAND NEW Softcover - 299pp - The mythology of the Green Berets, of their clandestine, special operations, has been celebrated in story and song. The reality, however, could be quite different. This story of one soldier's experience, the day-to-day loss and drudgery of Green Beret H. Lee Barnes, reveals the daily grind and quiet desperation behind polished-for-public-consumption accounts of military heroics. In When We Walked Above the Clouds, Barnes tells what it was like to be a Green Beret, first in the Dominican Republic during the civil war of 1965, and then at A-107, Tra Bong, Vietnam, where he eventually served as adviser to a Combat Recon Platoon consisting chiefly of Montagnard irregulars. Though "nothing extraordinary," as Barnes saw it, his months of simply doing what the mission demanded make for sobering reading: the mundane business of killing rats, cleaning guns, and building bunkers renders the intensity of patrols and attacks all the more harrowing. More than anything, however, Barnes's story is one of loss of morale lost to alcoholism, teammates lost to friendly fire, missions aborted, and missions endlessly and futilely repeated. And yet against this dark background, Barnes graciously honors the quiet professionals whose service, overshadowed by the outsized story of Vietnam, nonetheless carried the day.- Publisher's List Price = $19.95 -Our Price - $16.99

Palmer, U.S. Army (Ret.), Valor in Vietnam presents a historical overview of the war through the eyes of participants in each branch of service and throughout the entire course of the war. (MadMinutes) Clodfelter, Micheal - MAD MINUTES AND VIETNAM MONTHS - A SOLDIER'S MEMOIR- McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786467259 - BRAND NEW Full-Sized Laminated Softcover - Reprint of 1988 Original - 253pp - Maps - Index - This thoughtful memoir recounts one man's transformation from a glory-seeking, gung-ho Kansas teenager to a weary, twice-wounded grunt who had volunteered for a second tour of duty. Enlisting in the Army in June 1964 at age 17, Micheal Clodfelter was assigned to an artillery battalion of the 101st Airborne Division and arrived at Cam Ranh Bay on July 29, 1965; on August 9, 1966, after having requested a transfer to the infantry, he was assigned to Charlie Company, 2/502nd Airborne, serving in Phu Yen and Kontum provinces. A second injury resulted in his medical evacuation from Vietnam on January 8, 1967. Describing the intensity of "mad minutes" (the general discharge of all weapons along a defense perimeter to discourage a potential enemy attack) amid the monotony, exhaustion and horror of war, Clodfelter writes of entering "a territory from which none of us ever really returned."- Publisher's List Price = $19.95 -Our Price - $18

(ConThien) Coan, James P. - CON THIEN : THE HILL OF ANGELS- Univ Alabama Press - ISBN# 081735445X -BRAND NEW Softcover - 360pp - Glossary - Index - Biblio - Maps - Photos - Con Thien was a firebase and outpost in northern I Corps held by the U.S. Marines during much of the Vietnam War. Only 14 miles from the sea and two miles south of the demilitarized zone that separated North and South Vietnam, Con Thien became the recipient of regular artillery and rocket fire from NVA units located across the Ben Hai River in the DMZ. The Vietnamese called this 158-meter-high isolated hill Nui Con Thien ("small mountain with heavenly beings," or simply "hill of angels"). The Marine position there, actually comprising three small hills, overlooked one of the principal North Vietnamese infiltration routes into South Vietnam, and as a result, the Marines based there fought numerous engagements with NVA regulars. (Advisor) Cook, Lt. Col. John L. - THE ADVISOR - THE PHOENIX PROGRAM IN VIETNAM - Schiffer Publications - BRAND NEW Hardcover in dust jacket - 316pp - Maps - Black & White and Color Photos - From his arrival in war-torn Vietnam in 1968 to his reluctant departure twenty-five months later, John Cook served as an advisor in the district of Di An and took part in the systematic operations of the Phoenix Program to destroy the Infrastructure, the political organization of the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces. The Advisor is the story of those twenty-five months of fighting an laughing and hoping, and of the people who shared them - Major Chau, a man who so tremendously symbolized dedication to the destruction of the Infrastructure that the Viet Cong made several attempts on his life; Lietenant Hau, Cook's Vietnamese counterpart and close friend; Colonel Anderson and Major Allen, two of Di An's senior advisors; and other American and Vietnamese colleagues who - fighting a war at its "rice roots," rather than viewing it through myriad news analyses and peace demonstration demands - found it impossible to remain objective about such a conflict. More than the story of bombings, sweep operations, enemy confrontations, and hamlet pillages, The Advisor tells how one man came to see the Vietnam War as his war, how he bacame involved in the district villagers' struggle for their freedom from terrorism, and how he learned the true costs of that freedom - Overseas Shipping on this via Airmail Only! - Publisher's List Price = $35 - Our Price - $28.55

In a narrative as fragmented as the war itself, the only resolution is the same one reached by the Marines who fought the conclusion of a tour of duty with no happy ending. Each chapter describes a specific event, a story of emotion, or a remarkable person (some are heroes, some are cowards). The reader lives the experience alongside the author, gaining a true sense of the pulse-pounding contact, surrealism, pathos, humor, and beauty that defined one of the low points of the American experience - Publisher's List Price = $29.95 -Our Price - $26.95

Duong, Van Nguyen - THE TRAGEDY OF THE VIETNAM WAR - A SOUTH VIETNAMESE OFFICER'S ANALYSIS - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786432851 -BRAND NEW Laminated Full-Size Softcover - 268pp - Index - Notes - Biblio - Photos - Maps - The Vietnam War actually began in December 1946 with a struggle between the communists and the French for possession of the country. Vietnam's strategic position in southeast Asia along with veiled economic concerns and a political agenda led to the involvement of other countries, including the United States. Written by an officer in the Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces, this poignant memoir seeks to clarify the nuances of South Vietnam's defeat. From the age of 12, Van Nguyen Duong watched as the conflict affected his home, family, village and friends. He discusses not only the day-to-day hardships he endured from forced relocation and eventual imprisonment (after the fall of Saigon Van Nguyen Duong was imprisoned for 13 years for "re-education" ) but also the anguish caused by the illusive reality of Vietnamese independence. The various political forces at work in Vietnam, the hardships suffered by RVNAF soldiers after the 1975 U.S. withdrawal from Saigon, and the effect of reunification on the Vietnamese people are also discussed. An appendix contains a summary of the Eleven Point Program Accords of January 1962 - Publisher's List Price = $39.95 -Our Price - $36.95

(Orders) Emering, Edward J. - ORDERS, DECORATIONS AND BADGES OF THE SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM AND THE NATIONAL FRONT FOR THE LIBERATION OF SOUTH VIETNAM - Schiffer Publications - ISBN# 0764301438 - BRAND NEW Oversized Softcover - The Orders and Decorations of the "enemy" during the Vietnam War have remained shrouded in mystery for many years. References to them are scarce and interrogations of captives during the war often led to the proliferation of misinformation concerning them. To confuse the situation even more, these awards were bestowed by the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (SRV), known then as the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (DRV), and the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam (NLF), and a myriad of political and local organizations. Covered ar those Orders and Decorations now considered official by the SRV, as well as many of the obsolete awards bestowed by the DRV and the NLF. (VC) Emering, Edward J. - VIET CONG - A PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT - Schiffer Publications - ISBN# 0764307584 -BRAND NEW Oversized Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 200pp - The Viet Cong have long remained a mystery even to those who fought against them during America's longest and most divisive war. They have been given many acronyms and slang names by the American fighting men; included among them are V.C., Charlie and other less complimentary terms. They have been portrayed in many guises by the American press and popular Hollywood films. None, however, have really addressed the Viet Cong in human terms. This work will strip away the myth and mystery which surrounds the Viet Cong and, through the medium of their own candid photography, present them in human terms. They were everything we were - resourceful, cunning, adaptable, and most of all, human. As did our own American soldiers, they endured life in some of the harshest, most inhospitable terrain on earth. In doing so, they exhibited the will to sacrifice and be sacrificed for the collective goal of unification. Little did they know that we were serving the hidden agenda of the Politburo in Hanoi. In the end, they, like many of our soldiers, were betrayed and abandoned. This book portrays the Viet Cong as seen through their own photography. A cultural obsession, photographs were taken wherever and whenever possible. On many occasions, Allied forces were able to capture such photos. It is from such sources that these photographs are made available, most for the first time ever, to the general public - Overseas Shipping on this via Airmail Only! - Publisher's List Price = $39.95 - Our Price - $32.75

(VC Weapons) Emering, Edward J. - WEAPONS AND FIELD GEAR OF THE NORTH VIETNAMESE ARMY AND VIET CONG - Schiffer Publications - ISBN# 0764305832 - BRAND NEW Oversized Hardcover in dust jacket - 159pp - Biblio - Color Photos of Mines, Artillery Projectiles, Booby Traps, Flags and other equipment - Price Guide - Field gear and inert weapons and ordnance have long been popular items with militaria collectors. The Vietnam War by its very nature offers an incredible range and variety of these items for the interested collector. The North Vietnamese and their puppet troops of the National Liberation Front (Viet Cong or VC) relied primarily on communist allies (Russia, China, North Korea, Cuba and various Eastern Bloc countries of the era) for their weapons and field gear. For this reason, Vietnam represents a microcosm of gear from all of this century's wars, dating back to World War I, as well as a wide range of improvised weapons and equipment. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the variety of hand grenades used by the enemy, including Russian, Chinese, North Korean, Eastern European, French, Japanese and even modified, captured U.S. grenades. Although impossible to completely catalog the extreme variety of weapons and field gear used by the PAVN and VC, author Edward Emering has made a determined effort to present a wide overview of the weapons and field gear used from the late-1950s through the modern era. He has been aided in his goal by obtaining access to the world class collection of the National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum, located in Chicago, Illinois and by material from a number of extensive private collections. This book will help both the serious collector as well as those individuals interested in acquiring only a token piece of history to avoid potentially costly mistakes. Even before Marines stepped ashore in 1965, Navy medicine had established itself in South Vietnam, since two years earlier Navy medical personnel converted an old Saigon apartment house into Station Hospital Saigon. When American involvement reached its peak in 1968, the 750-bed Naval Support Activity Hospital Danang (NSAH) was in full operation, and two hospital ships the USS Repose and the USS Sanctuary cruised offshore, often only a 30-minute medevac flight from the battlefield. Whether the situation called for saving the lives of injured sailors aboard a burning aircraft carrier or treating a critically wounded Marine for shock in the rubble-strewn streets of Hue, Navy medical personnel were in Vietnam from the beginning of American involvement to the very end. This book weaves their personal experiences into the fabric of the Vietnam War, telling the story of the Navy Medical Department's involvement through first-person accounts by patients and the Navy medical personnel who served them, including physicians, dentists, nurses, and hospital corpsmen. More than 50 historic photos document their work - Publisher's List Price = $55 -Our Price - $52

Shortly after midnight, three entire battalions of North Vietnamese regulars burst out of the darkened jungle and began to swarm over the landing zone. The struggle for control lasted only about an hour. This book is the story of that hard fought battle and about the 150 GI's who repelled 800 heavily armed enemy soldiers. Told by the man who pioneered the use of firsthand, on-the-scene interviews with men who actually did the fighting, Bird is more gripping than any fictional account of the war in Southeast Asia. (Horse) Mertel, Col Kenneth D. - YEAR OF THE HORSE - VIETNAM -1ST AIR CAVALRY IN THE HIGHLANDS 1965-1967 - Schiffer Publications - ISBN# 0764301381 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in dust jacket - 352pp - Photos (Color) - Index - Appendices - Glossary - This book is the day-by-day story of the Jumping Mustangs - 1st Ballalion, Airborne, 8th Cavalry, of the 1st Air Cavalry Division, written by the man who knows them best. 1st Air Cav Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth Mertel. On 1 July 1965, at Fort Benning, Georgia, the 1st Air Cavalry Division was activated to employ newly developed techniques and tactics, providing the utmost in combat effectiveness and flexibility. After telling of the excitement at Benning over the formation of this revolutionary airmobile division, Colonel Mertel gives a vivid picture of the building of his own Jumping Mustang Battalion, the rigorous training of officers and men and, finally, the long voyage across the Pacific to Vietnam. Now the test. Would the new concept of airmobility, so painstakingly worked out stateside, produce the hoped-for results? The answer came quickly and dramatically in a rapid succession of search and destroy operations. Ia Drang . . . An Khe South . . . Plei Mei . . . the Cambodian border . . . Bong Son . . . Tarzan . . . In precipitous mountains, dense jungles, mud and water-filled rice paddles and expanses of view-obstructing elephant grass, the Jumping Mustangs sought out the enemy, engaging him in combat and stopping him in his tracks. Airmobility more than passed the test. Colonel Mertel pays tribute to the many acts of heroism of his men, who lived, worked and fought together in some of the world's most inhospitable conditions. He also writes movingly of those who never came back. In 1967 the President, at a White House ceremony, recognized the Division's success and valor by awarding it the Presidential Unit Citation for the action at Plei Mei. According to the Chines calendar, 1966 was the "Year of the Horse." It was the "Year of the Horse" for the Jumping Mustangs in Vietnam - Overseas Shipping on this via Airmail Only!- Publisher's List Price = $35 - Our Price - $28.65

For the next three decades, it was the main battery of the U.S. fleet and the primary strike weapon for carrier aviation. The A-6 was the first true all-weather strike aircraft in the Navy's inventory and carried a conventional bomb load second only to the B-52. Covering both Navy and Marine Corps service, this is the operational history of the Intruder and the Naval service's medium attack community told in the words of the men who flew it from Vietnam to Desert Storm, and the numerous brush fire wars in between. Twelve chapters include detailed descriptions of the Intruder's combat record in from its first deployment to Vietnam through the design's retirement in 1997. Every fleet version of the aircraft, and each squadron that flew the mighty A-6 are covered in detail. This book is heavily illustrated with photographs, maps and detailed appendices including squadron histories, deployments, production details and airframe losses. The authors, both carrier-experienced flyers, bring the exploits of the Intruder to life in the words of aircraft's aircrew. And it suffered heavy losses. The Skyraider's versatility and the mettle of its pilots were unmatched. This book takes not only a look at an old airplane, but at the warriors who flew and maintained the machine they called the "Spad." This volume captures the essence of combat in the Spad, and explains the broad range of Spad operations. The text, which is rich with the narratives of Spad pilots and ground crew, is complemented by over 300 original photographs, seventy emblems, and detailed listings of every Skyraider that flew in the war, and the colorful units to which they were assigned. Nesser left behind his wife and young son to fight in the controversial Vietnam War. Like many in his generation, he was deeply at odds with himself over the U.S. involvement in Vietnam, instilled with a strong sense of duty to his country but uncertain about its mission and his role in it. Nesser was deployed to the Ashau Valley, site of some of the war's heaviest fighting, and served eight months as an infantry rifleman before transferring to become a door gunner for a Chinook helicopter. In this stirring memoir, he recalls in detail the exhausting missions in the mountainous jungle, the terror of walking into an ambush, the dull-edged anxiety that filled quiet days, and the steady fear of being shot out of the sky. The accounts are richly illustrated with Nesser's own photographs of the military firebases and aircraft, the landscapes, and the people he encountered - Publisher's List Price = $29.95 - Our Price - $27

COOK - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786428045 - BRAND NEW Laminated Softcover - 326PP - Index - Photos - Biblio - Colonel Donald Gilbert Cook was the first U.S. Marine captured in Vietnam; the first and only Marine in history to earn the Medal of Honor while in captivity; and the first Marine POW to have a U.S. Navy ship named in his honor, the USS Donald Cook (DDG-75). On December 31, 1964, while serving as an observer with a South Vietnamese Marine Corps battalion on a combat operation against Viet Cong forces, he was captured near the village of Binh Gia in South Vietnam. Until his death in captivity in December 1967, Cook led ten POWs in a series of primitive jungle camps. His leadership and adherence to the U.S. Military Code of Conduct earned him the nation's highest military award, but Cook never received historical attention commensurate with his enormous accomplishments. This is the first book-length biography of Colonel Donald G. Cook. With background information on Cook's life and prewar career, the book concentrates especially on his three years in captivity, and is the first book exclusively about a Marine POW held in South Vietnam. It covers the ten other POWs under his command, including Sgt. Harold George Bennett (the first American POW executed in Vietnam) and Sgt. Isaac Camacho (the first American POW to escape in Vietnam). The author outlines the circumstances surrounding Cook's Medal of Honor citation and death. Throughout, Cook's adherence to the Corps' traditional leadership principles and knowledge of the Code of Conduct are highlighted, and his biography is a unique case study of exemplary leadership under extremely difficult conditions. Nearly 70 photographs are included. - Publisher's List Price = $35 -Our Price - $32 - LARGE PRINT EDITION IS ALSO AVAILABLE!

(EveryMarine) Simonsen, Robert - EVERY MARINE, 1968 VIETNAM: A BATTLE FOR GO NOI ISLAND - Heritage Books - ISBN# 0788433512 - BRAND NEW Softcover - 494pp - Name Index - Award Citations - Although not technically an island, Go Noi Island is surrounded by rivers, streams and roads. The "Island" traditionally served as a staging area for NVA units preparing for future attacks on the Da Nang area. News of upcoming operations in this sector always brought fear and anticipation for the forthcoming battle, as everyone knew that the enemy would be engaged on his own turf. The battles for this prized sector were fought time and again by many units: operation Allen Brook, operation Meade River, and operation Pipestone Canyon. Operation Allen Brook is representative of all these battles and serves as a tribute to all Vietnam Marines. This book takes the reader from the emergency formation of a Marine battalion at Camp Pendleton, California, to the battlefields of Vietnam where they slowly honed their war skills before joining the battle on Go Noi Island. Individual Marines describe the events and their feelings in their own words - $39.95

Almost two decades would pass following the end of the war before significant internal political changes, shifting regional alignments, changing Western interests, Sino-Soviet rapprochement, a nonmilitary settlement of the Cambodian conflict, and the collapse of the Soviet Union would bring Hanoi to the point of recognizing the importance of mending its relationship with the West. From the Paris peace talks to the U.S. government's decision in 1994 to lift the trade embargo against Vietnam, Hanoi's policy on American MIAs and POWs is examined, with particular focus on the influence of individual decision-makers on the process and the ways the Vietnamese leadership arrived at their negotiating strategies. - Publisher's List Price = $25 - Our Price - $22

As the book begins, in December 1967, the brigade has been in Vietnam for a year, and many of its battered 12-month men are returning home. This is timely, as the Communists seem to be in a lull, and the brigade commander, in order to whet his new soldiers to combat, requests a transfer to a more active sector, just above Saigon. Through January the battalions scour the sector, finding increasing enemy strength, NVA personel now mixed within Viet Cong units. But the enemy is lying low, and a truce has even been declared for the Vietnamese New Year, the holiday called Tet. On January 30, 1968, the storm breaks loose, as Saigon and nearly every provincial capital in the country is overrun by VC and NVA, bursting in unexpected strength from their base camps. In these battles we learn the most intimate details of combat, as the Communists fight with rockets, mortars, Chinese claymores, mines, machine guns and AK-47s. The battles evolve into an enemy favoring the cloak of night, the jungle both urban and natural and subterranean fortifications, against U.S. forces favoring direct confrontational battle supported by air and artillery. When the lines are only 25 yards apart, however, there is little way to distinguish between the firepower or courage of the assailants and the defenders, or even who is who at any given moment, as both sides have the other in direct sight. Many of the vividly described figures in this book do not make it to the end. The narrative is jarring, because even though the author was a company commander during these battles, he has based this work upon objective research including countless interviews with other soldiers of the 199th LIB. The result is that everything we once heard about Vietnam is laid bare in this book through actual experience, as U.S. troops go head-to-head at close-range against their counterparts, perhaps the most stubborn foe in our history - Publisher's List Price = $32.95 - Our Price - $28.95

Webb, James H. - FIELDS OF FIRE : THE CLASSIC NOVEL OF THE VIETNAM WAR - Naval Institute Press - ISBN # 1557509638 -BRAND NEW Softcover - 344pp - Glossary - Hailed as the most important novel to emerge from the Vietnam War when first published in 1978, this book launched a spectacular writing career for James Webb that now includes four bestselling novels. A much-decorated former Marine who fought and was wounded in Vietnam, Webb tells the story of a platoon of tough, young Marines enduring the tropical hell of Southeast Asian jungles while facing an invisible enemy--in a war no one understands. Filled with the sounds and smells of combat, it is nevertheless a book about people, an amazing variety of closely observed characters caught up in circumstances beyond their control. It is a powerful work that brilliantly expresses the basic ambiguity of war: the repulsion of war's destruction contrasted with the grisly attraction of war as the ultimate test of survival. Critics have compared this bestselling first novel to All Quiet on the Western Front and The Naked and the Dead, among other masterpieces, for authentically capturing the fury and agony of combat. This is the real war in Vietnam, told without histrionics or self pity. For many years the novel has been a part of the recommended reading list of the Commandant of the U.S. Marine Corps.- Publisher's List Price = $18.95 - Our Price - $16.95

Wise, E. Tayloe - ELEVEN BRAVO: A SKYTROOPER'S MEMOIR OF WAR IN VIETNAM - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 0786419164 - BRAND NEW Laminated Softcover - 282PP - Index - Biblio - Photos - Illustrations - The author served in Vietnam from May 1969 through April 1970. During those 11 months, he wrote an estimated 750-800 letters home. This memoir is based on those letters, which recounted the details of his experiences and also served as an outlet where he could express the terror, tedium and even boredom of his daily life while in Vietnam. It tells the story of the Vietnam War as this foot soldier viewed it from the jungle, as both a rifleman and a combat medic who was forced to learn his medical skills under fire, and who later became a personal waiter in the private mess hall of Major General E.B. Roberts, the Commanding General of the 1st Cavalry Division (Air Mobile). The story begins with a record of Wise's military history, his training as an infantryman in Leesville, Louisiana and his arrival in Vietnam on May 2, 1969. Chapter two details his first experience under enemy fire on May 11, when suicide squads penetrated their perimeter with the purpose of inflicting the maximum amount of damage with disregard to even the attackers' own lives. Chapters five and six recount the August 1969 battle of LZ Becky, a landing zone that was constructed just south of the Cambodian border and was destroyed only four weeks later. Chapter seven relates Wise's experiences after receiving a job as a waiter in the Commander General's mess hall. On April 9, 1970, his service ended and he headed home. The book contains diagrams of several battles and the author's personal photographs taken while he was in the jungle and in the rear echelon area of Phuoc Vinh - Publisher's List Price = $35 -Our Price - $33.99
