(BloodOil) BLOOD AND OIL - THE MIDDLE EAST IN WORLD WAR I - Inecom - BRAND NEW DVD - Approx 112 Minutes - Blood and Oil - The Middle East in World War I examines the devastating conflict and Western political intrigue that laid the foundation for wars, coups, revolts and military interventions in the Middle East. Except for the Dardanelles/Gallipoli campaigns, the extensive combat operations in the Middle East during World War I have been largely overlooked in documentary programs. Given the historical significance of the Ottoman Empire's demise in 1918, and the ongoing importance of Middle Eastern oil reserves to Western economies, a close study of this conflict provides two important lessons: 1. The Treaty of Versailles, agreed to by the Western Powers in 1919, paved the way for military and political chaos in the Middle East, which continues to this very day. 2. Oil reserves in the Middle East became an important strategic concern for Western Powers, helping to justify their economic, diplomatic and military interference in the region. Written and produced by Marty Callaghan (Archives of War, Remember Pearl Harbor: America Taken by Surprise), this 112-minute DVD also features extended expert interviews.- Publisher's List Price = $24.95 each - Our Price - $22.95

(FFL) Boyd, Douglas - THE FRENCH FOREIGN LEGION- Sutton - ISBN# 0750939397 - BRAND NEW Hardcover with a Dust Jacket - 368pp - Index - Notes - Biblio - Maps - Photos - Known for its austerity and discipline, deprivation and sacrifice, the French Foreign Legion is perhaps the most intriguing and famous fighting force in the world. For 170 years, jobless, homeless and loveless men have found in the Legion a sense of purpose worth all the rigors and risks of serving in the world's longest-standing mercenary army. One of the rewards for which men sign on with the Legion is French citizenship, and every legionnaire may claim it after serving three years with good conduct. The Legion has never had any problem attracting recruits: seven out of ten applicants are still rejected. But what is it that attracts men from so many countries and social backgrounds to accept the harsh discipline of this legendary mercenary army with a rigid code of honor straight out of the nineteenth century? Douglas Boyd tells the eventful story of the Legion from its inception in 1831 to defend France's colonial interests, to the Legion of today involved in peacekeeping and humanitarian duties worldwide. The author also examines the reasons behind the love-hate relationship between France and the foreigners she pays to spill their blood for her which are at the core of the Legion's history. This book covers WWI, WWII, Vietnam and other conflicts.- Publisher's List Price = $58.95 -Our Price - $52.95

(Signals) Bullock, Mike / Lyons, Laurence - MISSED SIGNALS ON THE WESTERN FRONT - HOW THE SLOW ADOPTION OF WIRELESS RESTRICTED BRITISH STRATEGY AND OPERATIONS IN WORLD WAR I - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786449378 - BRAND NEW Laminated Softcover - 228pp - Photos - llustrations - Notes - Biblio - Index - Though the medium of wireless communication was in relative infancy during World War I, the technology could have made a profound impact on tactical operations and on the entire strategic conduct of the war. Providing details on how and why the technology did not fulfill its promise as a great military tool until years later, the book points primarily to the British Army's institutional bias against wireless communication as the technology's downfall, reinforced by the crude, unreliable wireless sets with which the army began the war. It also demonstrates how improved wireless communications between infantry, command, artillery and air observation could have improved the flexibility, accuracy and effectiveness of the British military strategy in the German Spring Offensive, the Hundred Days Counteroffensive and the battles of the Somme, Passchendaele, and Cambrai - Publisher's List Price = $45 -Our Price - $42.99

(Origins1914) Camp, Dick - THE DEVIL DOGS AT BELLEAU WOOD : U.S. MARINES IN WORLD WAR I -Zenith Press - ISBN# 0760331898 -BRAND NEW Oversized Softcover - 127pp - Color Plates - Photos - Index - Facing massed German machine guns, the Marines made sweep after bloody sweep through Belleau Wood. Repeatedly accosted by the retreating French and urged to turn back, Captain Lloyd Williams of the 2nd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, uttered the now-famous retort, "Retreat, hell. We just got here." And indeed, by the end of that terrible June of 1918, the Marines had broken the back of the Germans powerful spring offensive. Their ferocity had earned them the nickname Teufelshunde--Devil Dogs--from their enemies; it also won such admiration from their allies that the French government changed the name of Belleau Wood to Bois de la Brigade de Marine. The Devil Dogs at Belleau Wood recreates the drama of the battle for Belleau Wood as it was experienced by those who were there. Drawing on numerous firsthand accounts of the month-long engagement, the book captures the spirit of the Leathernecks in desperate battle. It offers a harrowing look at a critical campaign in which, as one soldier says, "men were being mowed down like wheat." And, amidst the carnage and cruelty, it tells the very human story of camaraderie and courage that carried the day. Rich with the personal insights and observations that bring history to life, the book is illustrated with a great number of photographs, many of which are rare and never before published - Publisher's List = $19.95 - Our Price - $17.95

(Marines) Clark, George B. - DECORATED MARINES OF THE FOURTH BRIGADE IN WORLD WAR I - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 0786428260 - BRAND NEW Laminated Softcover - 266pp - Biblio - Index - World War I found American soldiers overseas participating in unprecedented acts of bravery and valor. Faced with the need to recognize these outstanding deeds by soldiers of all ranks and creeds, the United States established the Silver Star citation, consisting of a small star which was placed on a Victory Medal Ribbon by the honored soldier. These citations were issued by each division as well as by the Armed Expeditionary Force. This sometimes resulted in duplicate honors for one feat of valor and contributed to the general lack of a consistent process for awarding such citations. Nevertheless, the Silver Star, along with more prestigious awards such as the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross, reflected the significant contributions U.S. soldiers made to the war effort. This volume contains a complete accounting of every member of the Fourth Marine Brigade who received an award of some kind during World War I. Beginning with an overview of the brigade's contributions to the war effort, the book lists each individual and the honors he received. Citations, which were generally written by a superior (usually an officer), read as originally written and consequently do not always provide an accurate representation of the heroic act. Prewar and postwar experience is noted when available. The award entry site designated as Verdun, Belleau Wood, Soissons, St. Mihiel, Blanc Mont or Meuse Argonne is also listed. Foreign honors such as the French Croix de Guerre, the Montenegrin Silver Medal of Valor and Italian War Cross are denoted when applicable. An appendix contains detailed information on the inauguration of the Silver Star citation. - Publisher's List Price = $49.95 -Our Price - $47

(AEF) Clark, George B. - The American Expeditionary Force in World War I - A Statistical History, 1917-1919 - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786472239- BRAND NEW Laminated Softcover - 368pp - In April 1917, the United States ended its nonintervention policy and entered World War I as an "Associated Power" to aid the Allies in their fight against the Central Powers. The American Expeditionary Force, fighting alongside French and British troops, provided vital manpower on the Western Front during the Aisne Offensive and participated in major actions in the Saint-Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives that turned the tide late in the war. Clark, George B.- THE SECOND INFANTRY DIVISION IN WORLD WAR I - A HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE REGULARS, 1917-1919 - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786429608 - BRAND NEW Laminated Softcover - 262pp - Biblio - Index - Maps - Photos - Notes - Illustrations - When the United States entered World War I in 1917, it sent the American Expeditionary Force to relieve the worn and beleaguered Allied Forces. On September 20, 1917, Congress approved the creation of the Second Division of the American Expeditionary Force. A hybrid Marine/Army unit, it was conceived and ultimately formed overseas, primarily from units in France. Giving themselves the nickname "Second to None," the Second Division effectively stopped the German drive on Paris in June 1918, becoming the first American unit to fight the enemy in a major engagement and revitalizing the Allied war effort. This volume details the fighting experiences of the Second Division, from its creation in the fall of 1917 through 1919. The book follows the unit from training in Toulon through the major campaigns including Chateau Thierry, Soissons, Blanc Mont and Meuse Argonne and records the experiences of the men who served. Appendices provide information regarding the pedigree of the division and its units; a syllabi of the Second Division's experiences; and a list of major awards received by Second Division personnel. Detailed maps and period photographs are also included. - Publisher's List Price = $35 -Our Price - $32

At the time of his death he was considered by many, friend and foe alike, to be Germany's greatest ace and, had he lived, he would almost certainly have overtaken Manfred von Richthofen's victory total by early spring 1918. Voss is perhaps best remembered for his outstanding courage, his audacity in the air and the prodigious number of victories he achieved before being killed in one of the most swash-buckling and famous dogfights of the Great War; a fight involving James McCudden and 56 Squadron RFC, the most successful Allied scout squadron - $45

Doughty, Robert A. - PYRRHIC VICTORY : FRENCH STRATEGY AND OPERATIONS IN THE GREAT WAR - Harvard Univ Press - ISBN# 067401880X - BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 578pp - Notes - Biblio - Index - Maps - As the driving force behind the Allied effort in World War I, France willingly shouldered the heaviest burden. In this masterful book, Robert Doughty explains how and why France assumed this role and offers new insights into French strategy and operational methods. French leaders, favoring a multi-front strategy, believed the Allies could maintain pressure on several fronts around the periphery of the German, Austrian, and Ottoman empires and eventually break the enemy's defenses. But France did not have sufficient resources to push the Germans back from the Western Front and attack elsewhere. The offensives they launched proved costly, and their tactical and operational methods ranged from remarkably effective to disastrously ineffective. Using extensive archival research, Doughty explains why France pursued a multi-front strategy and why it launched numerous operations as part of that strategy. He also casts new light on France's efforts to develop successful weapons and methods and the attempts to use them in operations - Publisher's List Price = $39.95 - Our Price - $34.95

Ferrell, Robert H. - COLLAPSE AT MEUSE-ARGONNE : THE FAILURE OF THE MISSOURI-KANSAS DIVISION -Univ of Missouri Press - ISBN# 0826215327 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in a Dust Jacket (Protected in a New Brodart Dust Jacket Protector) - 160pp - Maps - Photos - Index - Notes - Biblio - The Thirty-fifth Division was based at Camp Doniphan on the Fort Sill reservation in Oklahoma and was trained essentially for stationary, or trench warfare. In March 1918, the German army launched a series of offensives that nearly turned the tide on the Western Front. The tactics were those of open warfare, quick penetrations by massive forces, backed by heavy artillery and machine guns. The American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) commanded by Gen. John J. Pershing were unprepared for this change in tactics. When the Thirty-fifth Division was placed in the opening attack in the Meuse-Argonne on September 26, 1918, it quickly fell. In addition to the Thirty-fifth Division's lack of experience, its problems were compounded by the necessary confusions of turning National Guard units into a modern assemblage of men and machines. Although the U.S. Army utilized observers during the initial years of World War I, their dispatches had piled up in the War College offices in Washington and, unfortunately, were never studied. The Thirty-fifth Division was also under the command of an incompetent major general and an incompetent artillery brigadier. The result was a debacle in five days, with the division line pushed backward and held only by the 110th Engineer Regiment of twelve hundred men, bolstered by what retreating men could be shoved into the line, some of them at gunpoint. Although three divisions got into trouble at the outset of the Meuse-Argonne, the Thirty-fifth's failure was the worst. After the collapse, the Red Cross representative of the division, Henry J. Allen, became governor of Kansas and instigated investigations by both houses of Congress. Secretary of War Newton D. Baker testified in an effort to limit the political damage. But the hullabaloo gradually died down, and the whole sad episode passed into the darker corridors of history - Publisher's List = $29.95 - Our Price - $27

Higonnet, Margaret R./ LA Motte, Ellen Newbold/ Borden, Mary- NURSES AT THE FRONT : WRITING THE WOUNDS OF THE GREAT WAR - Northeastern Univ Press - ISBN# 1555534848 - BRAND NEW Softcover - 161pp - excerpts of works by two American women authors whose insightful and evocative writings about their experience on the Western front have not been readily available since the interwar period. A useful glossary of French terms is included. When the war began, Ellen N. La Motte (1873-1961), a graduate of Johns Hopkins Training School, was a professional nurse working in Baltimore. In 1914 she volunteered her services to the American hospital in Paris. La Motte first published The Backwash of War : the Human Wreckage of the Battlefield as Witnessed by an American Hospital Nurse in 1916. A series of fourteen vignettes, the book recounted her nursing work in the horrifying conditions immediately behind the trenches in Belgium. In her introduction La Motte explains the book's title : "Much ugliness is churned up in the wake of mighty, moving forces.... this is the Backwash of War". Her raw images and painful depiction of the "wounds of war" led the publishers to withdraw the book during the propaganda efforts that accompanied American entry into the war. The book was republished in 1934, when isolationists praised its blunt and honest portrayal of battlefront suffering. - Mary Borden (1886-1968), the daughter of a wealthy Chicago businessman and a Vassar graduate, had married an Englishman and was living in London prior to WWI. In 1914 she volunteered with the French Red Cross. Like La Motte she immediately found herself frustrated with the inefficient administering of medical care to soldiers. Borden put her financial resources to the task of creating a one hundred-bed, frontline surgical unit--Hopital Chirurgical Mobile No. 1--which came under French military command, first at Ypres and later the Somme - $19.50

Louis Linn, a young Marine in this illustrious division, carried a sketchbook and pencil stub, drawing whenever he could to maintain his sanity in the madness of war. Several years after the Armistice, he used these sketches to write the stories of events that haunted him, that gave him nightmares, that kept him awake at night. Never before published, Linn's memoir recalls his training in Norfolk and Quantico, life in the trenches at Verdun, fighting at the Battle of Belleau Wood, his wounding at Soissons and again at St. Mihiel, and his subsequent hospitalization. Throughout, his sketches and woodcuts portray the action, providing a vivid account of the war from the trenches.- Publisher's List Price = $40 -Our Price - $36

Macpherson, Donald S. - A SOLDIER'S DIARY : THE WW1 DIARIES OF DONALD MACPHERSON - Vanwell Press - ISBN# 1551250683 - BRAND NEW Softcover - 192pp - Part of the Voices of War Series - Photos - Maps - Donald Macpherson was assigned as gunner with the 9th Battery, C.F.A., in January of 1917, and was present at the battles of Vimy Ridge, Hill 70, and Passchendaele, earning a Military Medal at the latter. His five small diaries, reproduced in their entirety here, comprise an engagingly articulate account of his wartime experiences, resolutely focusing on friends, family and duty rather than the horrors of war. A striking feature is the way he was able to make contact with his brothers, all officers in three different units: Douglas in the 16th Canadian Scottish, Ewart in the Royal Flying Corps, and Ross in Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. All four of them were together in London on New Year's Day, 1918. Donald was posted to the Battle of Amiens, where he was wounded, and he spent the remainder of the war in military hospitals. Demobilized in 1919, Donald returned to his teaching career in Toronto. With a foreword by noted naval historian Ken Macpherson, who provided the diaries and other details of his father's war story -- Publisher's List Price = $14.95 - Our Price - $12.95
MacPhail, Sir Andrew - HISTORY OF THE CANADIAN FORCES, 1914-19, MEDICAL SERVICES - Archive CD - BRAND NEW Book on CD Rom - First published 1925. While standing alone in its own right as a revealing history of this specialized and fascinating aspect of the Great War conflict, this book was also written to become a component of the comprehensive "History of the Canadian Forces in the Great War" being written and produced under the direction and supervision of Col. A. Fortescue Duguid in his position as the Director of the Historical Section, General Staff. Sir Andrew comes from the 'tell it as I see it' school and has no hesitation in pointing out political maneuvering, errors, and downright stupidity. Now that's not to say that this entire book is just an expos‚. Far from it. This is a fascinating account of how the medical sections of the allied (and occasionally the German) armies dealt with the challenges and unprecedented confluence of an unlimited, mechanized war, being fought in trenches, and a medical discipline which was in the process of transitioning from an art to a science. He includes plenty of statistical analysis of the medical consequences of sending over 400,000 Canadians to fight a war in Europe as well as records of the key staff running hospitals and other important medical services. Also not forgotten are the men and women who actually brought medicine to the battlefield. Sir Andrew provides a full listing of all the awards received and of all those who gave their lives in the medical service. Sir Andrew's writing is well planned and well implemented. He provides the relevant facts clearly, with plenty of reference to his supporting sources, and manages to explain the consequence and outcomes both at the strategic and the individual level. While it's inevitable that such a subject would involve some of the technical language of medicine there is not so much of it that the lay person cannot follow the thread with ease - $27.85

Poorly resourced but with overwhelming naval superiority, the British captured Baghdad in a campaign strikingly similar to the one the U.S. is executing today. Originally published in 1932 and written by the commander of the British naval forces, Tigris Gunboats is a gripping account of the three-year British expedition in Iraq and especially its naval operations. Launched as an attempt by the Indian army to secure Western oil supplies, the British campaign yielded startling initial successes followed by now-familiar challenges, including inter-tribal rivalry. Written with insight and authority, Tigris Gunboats, provides a fascinating insider's view of an operation that did not always run smoothly but whose results look all the more impressive when compared with the recent history of Iraq. - List Price = $34.95 - Our Price - $29.95

(KaisersMen)Passingham, Ian- ALL THE KAISER'S MEN : THE LIFE AND DEATH OF THE GERMAN ARMY ON THE WESTERN FRONT 1914-1918- Sutton Publishing - ISBN# 9780750942416 - BRAND NEW Oversized Softcover - 286pp - Glossary - Notes - Biblio - Index - Detailed Maps - Photos - Illustrations - Convinced that both God and the Kaiser were on their side, the officers and men of the Imperial German army went to war in 1914, supremely confident that they were destined for a swift and crushing victory in the West. The much-vaunted 'Schlieffen Plan' on which the anticipated German victory was based provided for an equally decisive victory on the Eastern Front. But it was not to be. From the winter of 1914 until the early months of 1918, the war on the Western Front was characterized by trench warfare. But the popular perception of war takes little or no account of the reality of life 'across the wire' in the German front line. A re-examination of the strategy and tactics of the German Army throughout the war, from the commanding generals to the ordinary soldiers at the Front, this book also assesses the implications of the Allied naval blockade on the German home front, the increasing problems of food and fuel shortages and the specters of nationwide disease, hunger and then widespread starvation in Germany. Ian Passingham gives a unique and fully illustrated insight into the daily life of the German troops facing the British and French between 1914 and 1918 and fills a significant gap in the historiography of World War I. - List Price = $34.95 - Our Price - $31.95

In this, the first comprehensive survey of this exciting new field, Andrew Robertshaw and David Kenyon introduce the reader to the techniques that are employed and record, in vivid detail, many of the remarkable projects that have been undertaken. They show how archaeology can be used to reveal the position of trenches, dugouts and other battlefield features and to rediscover what life on the Western Front was really like. And they show how individual soldiers are themselves part of the story, for forensic investigation of the war dead is now so highly developed that individuals can be identified and their fate discovered - List Price = $50 - Our Price - $37.95

(ImpGermI) Somers, Johan - IMPERIAL GERMAN FIELD UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT 1907-1918 VOLUME I: FIELD EQUIPMENT, OPTICAL INSTRUMENTS, BODY ARMOR, MINE AND CHEMICAL WARFARE, COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT, WEAPONS, CLOTH HEADGEAR - Schiffer Publications - ISBN# 0764322613 - BRAND NEW Oversized Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 384pp - Vol I - This set provides the reader with an insight into the wide range of uniforms, weapons and field equipment used by the Imperial German Army during the First World War. The devastating and dramatic character of the war required many innovations in military clothing and equipment. New uniforms and adequate protection was a must, and steel helmets appeared on the battlefield, replacing the outdated spiked helmets. Even medieval-looking items, like steel breastplates and trench clubs, were produced, giving the soldiers a fearful appearance. The threat of poison gas caused the immediate development of gas masks. It was also the time of the tank, observation balloons, mine warfare, the Zeppelin, airplanes, flame-throwers, deadly machine guns, and other war machinery that saw service, sometimes for the first time. Using over 1,000 color and period photographs from private collections and museums, the author succeeds in showing a broad range of artifacts, together with full and to the point descriptions. This series is aimed towards the novice or advanced German World War I collector and enthusiast, military history student, modeller, researcher and re-enactor - Direct shipped in U.S. via UPS by Publisher in 1-2 Days unless otherwise noted (NOT Shipped via Book Rate!) - Added UPS shipping charge will apply - Overseas Shipping on this via Airmail Only! - Publisher's List Price = $69.95 - Our Price - $53

Wolfe, Avery Royce - LETTERS FROM VERDUN - FRONTLINE EXPERIENCES OF AN AMERICAN VOLUNTEER IN WORLD WAR 1 FRANCE - Casemate Pub - ISBN# 9781932033946 - BRAND NEW Oversized Hardcover in Jacket (Protected in a New Brodart Jacket Cover) - 240pp - Though the United States was late to enter the Great War, a number of idealistic young Americans wished to take part from the beginning. One of these was Avery Royce Wolf, a highly educated scion of a family in America's burgeoning industrial heartland. Volunteering as an ambulance driver with the French Army in the Verdun sector, Royce sent back a constant stream of highly detailed letters describing the experience of frontline combat, not excluding comments on strategy, the country he encountered, and the Allies' prospects for success. This treasure trove of brilliant letters, only recently discovered, is accompanied by several albums worth of rare, high-quality photos depicting aspects of the Great War in France never previously published. The book contains expert overviews to set the reader in Royce's time and place; however, the narrative is most gripping with his own day-to-day perceptions, analytical and emotional in turn. The reader can sympathize with Royce's dilemma when his original term of service expires and he wonders whether to return home. But then the American army begins to arrive and he decides to continue on. We hear firsthand how the U.S. troops are first kept out of battle, then take casualties no veteran unit would have sustained, because of their fresh-faced audacity. When the Ludendorff Offensive unfolds in spring 1918 there is nothing but disaster to report, as each day witnesses a new collapse before the seemingly unstoppable Germans. Royce believes that the entire Allied war effort is doomed. But then somehow the Allies hold on and the war is nearly at an end. Full of exciting experiences as well as interesting firsthand analyses such as comparing French and German trench works (the latter were far better), Letters from Verdun brings the reader amazingly close to the frontlines of the Great War, almost as if in person - List Price = $39.95 - Our Price - $34.95

During the period 1890-1910 the German Army of Kaiser Wilhelm II was ablaze in color, particularly the Garde and Cavalry regiments. In this superb new volume the author brings to the student of uniforms, as well as the art and military historian, the true glory of this brief, but most colorful time. Carl Becker was a skillful and talented artist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, whose treatment of German uniforms, the military pomp and ceremony, as well as the work-a-day activities of the Kaiser's army, are both realistically and artistically among the very best. The 104 never before published uniform plates are a treasure trove of color, action, and rarity which have only been viewed by a select few before this publication. The additional illustrations from books and the postcard art reproduced here well display the scope and depth of Becker's work. Technically correct, and artistically rendered on the subject of Kaiser Wilhelm II's flamboyant army of 1890-1910, this book will be a welcome addition to the library of the collector, the student of military costume, modelers and the appreciator of well executed military art - Publisher's List Price = $49.95 - Our Price - $39.50
