In this first volume of the Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson shows why no modern reader can understand the ultimate victory of the Allied powers without a grasp of the great drama that unfolded in North Africa in 1942 and 1943. That first year of the Allied war was a pivotal point in American history, the moment when the United States began to act like a great power. Beginning with the daring amphibious invasion in November 1942, An Army at Dawn follows the American and British armies as they fight the French in Morocco and Algeria, and then take on the Germans and Italians in Tunisia. Battle by battle, an inexperienced and sometimes poorly led army gradually becomes a superb fighting force. Central to the tale are the extraordinary but fallible commanders who come to dominate the battlefield: Eisenhower, Patton, Bradley, Montgomery, and Rommel. - - List Price = $35 - Our Price - $34.95

(Day of Battle) Atkinson, Rick - THE DAY OF BATTLE : THE WAR IN SICILY AND ITALY, 1943-1944 - Henry Holt & Co - ISBN# 0805062890 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket (Protected in a New Brodart Jacket Cover) - 823pp - In the second volume of his epic trilogy about the liberation of Europe in World War II, Pulitzer Prize winner Rick Atkinson tells the harrowing story of the campaigns in Sicily and Italy - In An Army at Dawn--winner of the Pulitzer Prize--Rick Atkinson provided a dramatic and authoritative history of the Allied triumph in North Africa. Now, in The Day of Battle, he follows the strengthening American and British armies as they invade Sicily in July 1943 and then, mile by bloody mile, fight their way north toward Rome. The Italian campaign's outcome was never certain; in fact, Roosevelt, Churchill, and their military advisers engaged in heated debate about whether an invasion of the so-called soft underbelly of Europe was even a good idea. But once under way, the commitment to liberate Italy from the Nazis never wavered, despite the agonizingly high price. The battles at Salerno, Anzio, and Monte Cassino were particularly difficult and lethal, yet as the months passed, the Allied forces continued to drive the Germans up the Italian peninsula. Led by Lieutenant General Mark Clark, one of the war's most complex and controversial commanders, American officers and soldiers became increasingly determined and proficient. And with the liberation of Rome in June 1944, ultimate victory at last began to seem inevitable... - - List Price = $35 - Our Price - $27.95

(Guns at Last Light) Atkinson, Rick - THE GUNS AT LAST LIGHT: THE WAR IN WESTERN EUROPE, 1944-1945 - Henry Holt & Co - ISBN# 978080506290 - BRAND NEW Hardcover with a Dust Jacket (Protected in a New Brodart Cover) - 896pp - It is the twentieth century's unrivaled epic: at a staggering price, the United States and its allies liberated Europe and vanquished Hitler. In the first two volumes of his bestselling Liberation Trilogy, Rick Atkinson recounted how the American-led coalition fought through North Africa and Italy to the threshold of victory. Now he tells the most dramatic story of all the titanic battle for Western Europe. D-Day marked the commencement of the final campaign of the European war, and Atkinson's riveting account of that bold gamble sets the pace for the masterly narrative that follows. The brutal fight in Normandy, the liberation of Paris, the disaster that was Operation Market Garden, the horrific Battle of the Bulge, and finally the thrust to the heart of the Third Reich all these historic events and more come alive with a wealth of new material and a mesmerizing cast of characters. Atkinson tells the tale from the perspective of participants at every level, from presidents and generals to war-weary lieutenants and terrified teenage riflemen. When Germany at last surrenders, we understand anew both the devastating cost of this global conflagration and the enormous effort required to win the Allied victory.. - - List Price = $40 - Our Price - $34.99

This book tells the story of those men, from the fighting in Hong Kong, through the sinking, and for some, to liberation and beyond. Although never previously studied in any depth, the sinking of the Lisbon Maru was the most costly American on British "Friendly Fire" incident of the Second World War. Of the 4,500 of Hong Kong's garrison who perished during the war, 1,000 died directly or indirectly from this sinking. From American, British, Hong Kong and Japanese sources, this book reconstructs the fateful voyage of the Lisbon Maru, and the experiences of the captives, the captors, and those on board the submarine that sank her - $45.95

On December 8, 1941, at 12:35 P.M., 196 Japanese Navy bombers and fighters crippled the largest force of B-17 four-engine bombers outside the United States and also decimated their protective P-40 interceptors. The sudden blow allowed the Japanese to rule the skies over the Philippines, removing the only effective barrier that stood between them and their conquest of Southeast Asia. This event has been called "one of the blackest days in American military history." How could the army commander in the Philippines the renowned Lt. Gen. Douglas MacArthur have been caught with all his planes on the ground when he had been informed in the small hours of that morning of the Pearl Harbor attack and warned of the likelihood of a Japanese strike on his forces? In this book, author William H. Bartsch attempts to answer this and other related questions - Publisher's List Price = $40 - Our Price - $36

Using previously unpublished photographs, many of which have come from the albums of individuals who took part in the war, it presents a unique visual account of the various German guns that were deployed for action between 1939 and 1945. The book analyses the development of the German gun at war and shows how it became of decisive importance for the preparation and the successful conduct of attack and defense. It describes how German forces carefully built up their assault forces utilizing all available guns and making into an effective killing machine. It shows how various Panzerj„ger and Panzergrenadier units fought on the battlefield using a host of antitank guns with lethal effect. Throughout the book it depicts life as a gunner, how the guns were deployed for action, and illustrates the various modes of transport that were used to move the guns from one battle front to another. Each chapter details the various guns that went into production and eventually saw action on the battlefield. - Publisher's List = $24.95 - Our Price - $21.45

Bennett, G. H./ Bennett, Roy - HITLER'S ADMIRALS- Naval Institute Press - ISBN# 1591140617 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket (Protected in a New Brodart Jacket Cover) - 248pp - Index - At the end of World War II, British Naval Intelligence persuaded a number of German admirals held as prisoners-of-war to write essays setting out their thoughts on Germany's build up to war, the early victories, and its eventual defeat. These essays languished in the British archives, unnoticed by researchers until a father-son team of naval historians recognized their value. Nine of the best are included in this book. Among the authors are the heads of the Kriegsmarine, surface fleet, and naval intelligence, chief of the naval war staff, flag officer of U-boats, senior liaison officer to the Italian Navy, commander of small battle units, senior naval officer in the Black Sea, and C-in-C West. The raw immediacy of their opinions sets them apart from memoirs written years after the event, when time for reflection, access to records, and consultation with colleagues often moderate views. Of particular interest are their views on the influence of Hitler and the Nazi leadership on the war at sea, the changing technology of naval warfare, and the sharp differences of opinion on how victory might have been won.- List Price = $32.95 - Our Price - $27.95

Berger, Florian - THE FACE OF COURAGE: THE 98 MEN WHO RECEIVED BOTH THE KNIGHT'S CROSS AND THE CLOSE COMBAT CLASP IN GOLD - Fedorowicz Publishing - ISBN# 9780921991908 - BRAND NEW Hardcover issued without jacket - Introduction by Manfred D”rr - 600 pages, more than 570 photographs and Illustrations - the story of the 98 soldiers of the German Armed Forces Army, Air Force and Waffen-SS who were awarded both the Knight's Cross and the Close Combat Clasp in Gold during World War II. These men were members of a unique group. They were honored for actions that helped decisively influence the battlefield, and they stared into the eyes of death on no less than 50 occasions. While individuals were often honored for one or the other quality, it was a rare man indeed that showed both leadership prowess and the ability to survive close combat on many occasions. Although more than 7,000 soldiers received the Knight's Cross Germany's highest military award, often compared to the United States' Congressional Medal of Honor or the British Victoria Cross only 98 also received the highest award for physical courage in the face of the enemy. While the student of World War II may find many familiar names in this book, there are also a number of less-famous soldiers that achieved this high honor. In addition to offering several pages of text and photographs devoted to each of the individual recipients, the book offers a concise overview of the creation, purpose and award criteria for both of the medals, a discussion of contentious cases and exhaustive footnotes. (BlackCross3) Bergstrom, Christer - BLACK CROSS RED STAR : VOL 3 - THE AIR WAR OVER THE EASTERN FRONT - Eagle Editions - ISBN# 0976103443 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket (Protected in a New Brodart Cover) - Never before has the history of the air war on the Eastern Front been written in such depth, in such detail, and so carefully balanced between both sides. The air war on the Eastern Front in World War II was history's largest and longest air campaign. Nevertheless, it has been one of the least known and least understood chapters of aviation history. This is because prior to the release of the Black Cross/Red Star series, publications on this immense subject have been based on material taken almost exclusively from the German side. Black Cross/Red Star, presented in several photo-laden volumes, has evolved as the most complete and detailed series ever published on the air war on the Eastern Front. Volume 3, has been subtitled Everything for Stalingrad and covers the German summer offensive in 1942; the subsequent fierce air battles over the Caucasus; the Luftwaffe's onslaught on Convoy PQ-17; the hard air war over the Central and Northern combat zones, when the Soviets launched their relief offensives in the summer and fall of 1942; and, mainly, the huge Air Battle over Stalingrad. Similar to Volume 2, Volume 3 will contain a large number of photos and 37 high-quality aircraft color profiles, by one of the best aircraft profile artists in the world--Claes Sundin - $70

(Footsoldier) Michael Bilder with James G. Bilder - A FOOT SOLDIER FOR PATTON - THE STORY OF A "RED DIAMOND" INFANTRYMAN WITH THE U.S. THIRD ARMY - Casemate - ISBN# 9781932033915 -BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket (Protected in a New Brodart Jacket Cover) - 320pp - Photos - Maps - Roll of Honor - A brutally honest depiction of day-to-day combat in World War II . . .A rarely frank account of the U.S. infantry experience in northern Europe, A Foot Soldier for Patton takes the reader from the beaches of Normandy through the giddy drive across France, to the brutal battles on the Westwall, in the Ardennes, and finally to the conquest of Germany itself. Patton's army is best known for dashing armored attacks, its commander combining the firepower of tanks with their historic lineage as cavalry. But when the Germans stood firm the greatest fighting was done by Patton's long undersung infantry the foot sloggers who were called upon to reduce enemy strong points, and who took the brunt of German counterattacks. Michael Bilder, a member of the 5th Infantry ("Red Diamond" division), played a unique role in the Third Army's onslaught. A rifleman foremost, he was also a German-speaker, called upon for interrogations and special duties. Also a combat lifeguard, he played a key role in successive river crossings. An astute observer, he relates dozens of fascinating insights into the campaign, from dealing with German snipers to intoxicated Frenchwomen, as well as relaying the often morbid humor of combat. Laughter, for example, erupts among Bilder's unit when a hated Graves Registration officer, known for robbing the pockets of the dead, gets his hand blown off by a German booby trap. When the 5th Infantry comes up against the fortress of Metz, the battle is detailed in all its horror, as is the sudden drive into the flank of the Bulge, where the Americans face their first winter battle against enemy veterans of Russia. Incidents common to the ordinary GI, but which seldom see the light of day in histories, are routinely related in this book, enriching the reader's sense of the true reality of World War II combat - List Price = $32.95 - Our Price - $26.99

The 32d Infantry Division arrived in Australia 14 May 1942. The first element of the division to enter the combat zone by air for Port Moresby 16 September to be joined by other elements arriving by sea 28 September and by air 2 October. Units of the 32d were deployed defensively along the Goldie River on the left flank of the Australian garrison force for the Port Moresby area. Fighting along the Goldie River to protect the Australian left flank, the 32d drove the enemy back along the Kokoda Trail and stopped the enemy threat to Port Moresby. Elements were flown to the Buna area where they were joined, 15 November 1942, by the 2d Bn. of the 126th Infantry which had trekked over the Owen Stanley Mountains. The difficult struggle for Buna-Sanananda was completed, 22 January 1943, and the 32d returned to Australia for rest and training. On 2 January 1944, elements landed at Saidor, and helped to end enemy resistance, 14 April 1944. On 23 April, elements took part in the landing at Aitape, the Division arriving on 3 May. After meeting slight initial resistance, the 32d had to withstand savage counterattacks in the Drinumor River area. By 31 August Aitape was secured and the Division rested. Elements landed on Morotai on 15 September. The 32d CP opened at Hollandia, 1 October to stage for the Philippines. It landed on Leyte, 14 November, and went into action along the Pinamopoan-Ormoc highway, taking Limon and smashing the Yamashi ta line by bitter hand-to-hand combat. Union with elements of 1st Cavalry Division in the vicinity of Lonoy, 22 December, marked the collapse of enemy resistance in the upper Ormoc Valley. From Leyte the Division moved to Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, 27 January 1945. It pushed up the Villa Verde Trail, 30 January, and after more than 100 days of fighting took Imugan and met the 25th Infantry Division near Santa Fe, 28 May, securing Balete Pass, the gateway to the Cagayan Valley. While elements continued mopping-up activities near Imugan, other units moved to rest and rehabilitation centers. Active elements secured the Baguio area, wiped out enemy groups in the Agno River Valley area, and opened Highway 11 as a supply route. Operations ceased on 15 August 1945 - $295

Booker, Bryan D. - AFRICAN AMERICANS IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY IN WORLD WAR II- McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786469048 - BRAND NEW Full-Sized Laminated Softcover - 366pp - 37 photos, tables, appendix, notes, bibliography, index - The political, economic and social landscapes of the United States in the early 1940s were split by one overriding factor--race. This book explores the ways this separation extended to the military forces and the impact segregation had on World War II. Beginning with an overview of African Americans and the military from the inception of the United States and a brief history of the African American role in World War I, the focus moves to between-the-wars movements such as the Protective Mobilization Plan promoting racial integration of the military. The main focus is the African American role in World War II and the stigma that remained despite their valor. Groups discussed include the Women's Army Corps; tank destroyers; separate infantry regiments such as the 24th, 65th, 364th, 366th and 372nd; and the 2nd cavalry. Also included is a list of African American World War II veterans belatedly (and mostly posthumously) awarded medals of honor on January 13, 1997. - Publisher's List Price = $25 -Our Price - $22

For 170 years, jobless, homeless and loveless men have found in the Legion a sense of purpose worth all the rigors and risks of serving in the world's longest-standing mercenary army. One of the rewards for which men sign on with the Legion is French citizenship, and every legionnaire may claim it after serving three years with good conduct. The Legion has never had any problem attracting recruits: seven out of ten applicants are still rejected. But what is it that attracts men from so many countries and social backgrounds to accept the harsh discipline of this legendary mercenary army with a rigid code of honor straight out of the nineteenth century? Douglas Boyd tells the eventful story of the Legion from its inception in 1831 to defend France's colonial interests, to the Legion of today involved in peacekeeping and humanitarian duties worldwide. The author also examines the reasons behind the love-hate relationship between France and the foreigners she pays to spill their blood for her which are at the core of the Legion's history. This book covers WWI, WWII, Vietnam and other conflicts.- Publisher's List Price = $58.95 -Our Price - $52.95

(Workshop) Burger, Adolf - THE DEVIL'S WORKSHOP - A MEMOIR OF THE NAZI COUNTERFEITING OPERATION - Frontline Books - ISBN # 9781848325234 -BRAND NEW Hardcover with Dust Jacket (Protected in a New Brodart Jacket Cover) - 288pp - Name Index - Photos - One of the most remarkable episodes of WWII was the Nazi attempt to forge currency and trigger the economic collapse of the Allies. The counterfeit operation was one of the largest the world has ever seen and lead to the postwar reissue of sterling. At the Sachsenhausen concentration camp near Berlin, 144 Jewish prisoners of 13 different nationalities were forced to work on producing counterfeit pound and dollar notes worth billions. The plan was known as Operation Bernhard. The forgeries that were produced were virtually undetectable: only the most senior forgers were able to spot fakes, where even the Bank of England failed to do so. In this extraordinary memoir, the sole surviving Czech counterfeiter Adolf Burger describes his wartime experiences, including the murder of his wife Gizela in Auschwtiz and his time as a prisoner in four concentration camps. He was working as a counterfeiter until his liberation from the Ebensee camp on 5 May 1945 and was present at Toplitzee lake on July 5th 2000 when thousands of forged notes were brought to the surface. Supported by hitherto unseen documentation and photographs that Burger took of his fellow prisoners after the war, this is a shocking account which sheds fresh light on the calculated barbarity of the Nazi war machine. Adolf Burger was a consultant for the film The Counterfeiters, winner of the 2008 Foreign Language Oscar. His memoir has been published in Hungarian, Persian, Japanese and Czech. He continues to travel to speak about his wartime experiences - List Price = $39.99 - Our Price - $32.95

(Honor) Carano, Steve - NOT WITHOUT HONOR : THE NAZI POW JOURNAL OF CLAUDIO CARANO - Univ Arkansas Press - ISBN# 1557288844 -BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 159pp - Inddex - Biblio - Photos - Poetry and POW Camp Drawings - Edited by Kay Sloan - On a cold December day in l943, Claudio "Steve" Carano's B-17 bomber was shot down over the Dutch coast on the return flight to England. Thus marked the beginning of his eighteen-month incarceration in Stalag 17 b, the camp made famous in the Billy Wilder film and in the televison show Hogan's Heroes. During his confinement Carano secretly kept a journal in his Red Cross blank book, filling it with meticulously penned entries and illustrations. It takes the reader deep behind the notorious wire fence surrounding the prison and into the world where men clung to their humanity through humor, faith, camaraderie, daily rituals, and even art.Not Without Honor threads together the stories of three American POWs Carano; his buddy Bill Blackmon, who was also at Stalag 17 b; and John C. Bitzer, who survived the brutal "Death March" from northern Germany to liberation in April 1945. At times the journal reads like a thriller as he records air battles and escape attempts. Yet in their most gripping accounts, these POWs ruminate on psychological survival. The sense of community they formed was instrumental to their endurance. This compelling book allows the reader to journey with these young men as they bore firsthand witness to the best and worst of human nature - Publisher's List Price = $29.95 -Our Price - $24.45

(MyTime) Carson, Andrew D. - My Time in Hell - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786473755 - BRAND NEW Full-Sized Laminated Softcover -264pp - 6 photos, index - When Andrew Carson joined the United States Army in 1941, he was promised good food, travel, a supply of clothing, a place to sleep, and thirty dollars a month. Within seven weeks, Private Carson was shipped to the Philippines--with no boot camp, no training, not one minute of close order drill. Captured by the Japanese less than one year later, the young soldier endured the hardships of the Cabanatuan prison camps, nearly died from dysentery, and then was put aboard a Japanese hellship bound for Japan. There, he worked in the Fukuoa coal mines, a virtual slave laborer until Japan surrendered. This is the harrowing tale of one man's survival, and how he came through the ordeal with dignity and respect for his fellow soldiers. - Publisher's List Price = $25 -Our Price - $23

Their incursion threatened Australia and her vital American supply lines. Neither scheduled nor prepared for offensive action, the 1st Marine Division was directed to take the airfield. The result was a bloodbath; by the time it was over, less than one in five of the Marines in the 1st Parachute Battalion walked off Bloody Ridge. (Colgan) Colgan, William B. - WORLD WAR II FIGHTER-BOMBER PILOT, VALIANT MULTI-MISSION AIR WAR, WHAT IT WAS LIKE - Heritage Books - ISBN# 9780788445316 - BRAND NEW Softcover - 232 pp - Fighter-bomber flying and fighting originated in World War I as pursuit pilots strafed and dropped small bombs on the enemy below. However, it was in World War II that the term "fighter-bomber" emerged, as American fighter pilots combined combat actions of dogfight, bomb/rocket, and strafe into extensive "fighter-bomber" operations. These operations became universally recognized for their major role in that war and in air power ever since. An official news release at the end of World War II stated: "Fighter Squadron Commander, Major Colgan, a top fighter pilot in Europe, in combat August 1943-May 45, CO a full year he accumulated more missions, decorations, narrow escapes, and friends (ground forces) than the vast majority of other pilots in the war." His vivid account here of courageous fighter-bomber action on varied, deadly, low-altitude missions was written for the general public. It has drawn wide praise as a "gripping, magnificent" story of people at war and has been acclaimed as an "accurate, definitive, vital, long overdue" history. It is often cited as the prime, and now a most timely, book on the heritage of current U.S. multi-role fighter pilots/crews and planes: the F-15E, F-16, F/A-18, F-22, and F-35-today's "fighter-bombers." Colonel Colgan also served in combat in Korea and Vietnam, held key positions in requirements for and test of new fighters/fighter-bombers, and retired as Commander, 326th Air Division, Hawaii. He was inducted into The Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame, 1996, "Top Fighter-Bomber Pilot." In this book he tells far more than ever done before about World War II fighter-bomber pilots and unit ground personnel: their lives; their war; their dedication, duty, valor, and sacrifice. This is their story and legacy - List Price = $24 - Our Price - $22.50

The War Department placed the 26th "Yankee" Division (YD) under the jurisdiction of the 1st Coast Artillery District, a subdivision of the U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps. Military leaders charged the division with securing the coast of New England and Long Island, later expanding its area to include the entire eastern seaboard. Focusing primarily on the unit's work in "home defense" from January 1942 through November 1943, this history begins with prewar activation and training and recounts in detail the two highly publicized incidents of saboteurs coming ashore in June 1942. Also included are reports of U-boat sightings and encounters with subversive agents by veterans of the YD while on patrol. Firsthand accounts of members of the division provide a look at day-to-day operations. - List Price = $39.95 - Our Price - $37

They were the top guns of their day and came to be feared by the Japanese fighter pilots who described them as "attacks on us by wolves." Their victorious achievements are as follows: 152 Japanese planes destroyed in the air and two on the ground in only 76 days of combat; five small enemy cargo ships and 17 barges carrying troops and supplies sent to the bottom of the sea. No bomber escorted by them was lost to enemy aircraft and no ship covered by them was ever hit by bomb or aerial torpedo. The squadron had thirteen aces and two more who later went on to become aces with VF-84 (combat veterans of VF-17 composed the nucleus of this squadron). They were the first Navy squadron into combat action with the new Chance Vought Corsair and were instrumental in proving this powerful new fighter to the Navy. VF-17 were known as the Skull and Crossbones squadron and "Blackburn's Irregulars" - having adopted the old pirates ensign of the Jolly Roger as the squadron insignia; since World War II they have become known as the "Jolly Rogers." Decker, Malcolm- FROM BATAAN TO SAFETY - THE RESCUE OF 104 AMERICAN SOLDIERS IN THE PHILIPPINES- McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786433964 - BRAND NEW Laminated Softcover - 222pp - Notes - Biblio - Index - For American troops stationed in the Philippines, December 8, 1941, began with shocking reports of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, followed by a Japanese air attack on Clark Field in southern Luzon. Deprived of reinforcements, American and Filipino troops surrendered Bataan to the Japanese by April 9, 1942. For the 400 American soldiers who escaped the Bataan Death March and hundreds of others who refused to surrender, escaping the Bataan Peninsula to Luzon was a life-or-death journey. Among the local families who risked their lives to provide food and shelter to fleeing American soldiers were twin brothers and transplanted American sugar cane farmers Bill and Martin Fassoth. With Bill's Filipina wife Catalina, they ministered to over 100 Americans between April 17, 1942, and April 4, 1943. Because they wouldn't make their camps targets by turning them over to the American military, the Fassoths were denied any postwar compensation for their efforts. The stories of the Fassoths, the soldiers they risked everything to save and the fates of all involved following the Fassoths' surrender to raiding Japanese forces are an important and fascinating chapter of World War II history- Publisher's List Price = $35 -Our Price - $31

They helped him win at El Alamein and all the North African battles up to the capture of Tunis, and eventually in North West Europe with D-Day and the invasion of the Third Reich. Montys Northern Legions is the story of two distinguished formations whose origins lay mainly in the north of England. The first is 50th Northumbrian Division, a fine infantry division with three brigades, first blooded at El Alamein, later in Sicily. Monty chose 50th Division to have the dangerous honour of attacking on D-Day in the first wave ashore on Gold Beach. The only VC awarded on D-Day was to Company Sergeant-Major Hollis of the Green Howards. The division fought through the Normandy campaign up towards the German border before it was disbanded in late 1944. After several years in training, 15th Scottish Divisions three brigades swept into Normandy in Operation Epsom, Montys first great battle for the vital city of Caen. They fought their way through France and the Low Countries and were one of two assault divisions entrusted to storm across the Rhine in Operation Plunder. (Handguns) Derby, Harry L. / Brown, James D. - JAPANESE MILITARY CARTRIDGE HANDGUNS 1893-1945 - A REVISED AND EXPANDED EDITION OF "HAND CANNONS OF IMPERIAL JAPAN" - Schiffer Publications - ISBN# 0764317806 -BRAND NEW Oversized Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 350pp - When originally published in 1981, The Hand Cannons of Imperial Japan was heralded as one of the most readable works on firearms ever produced. To arms collectors and scholars, it remains a prized source of information on Japanese handguns, their development, and their history. In this new Revised and Expanded edition, original author Harry Derby has teamed with Jim Brown to provide a thorough update reflecting twenty years of additional research. The authors have retained the format and much of the text of the original edition, focusing on military cartridge arms from the 1893-1945 period. Signal pistols, foreign-procured military handguns, ammunition, holsters, and accessories are also covered. Significant changes are included based on new findings, and a great deal of new information has been added, together with color illustrations of significant specimens. A number of newly discovered variants are identified and described, and expanded tables of reported serial numbers and production data are provided. Coverage and explanation of Japanese markings has been greatly enhanced, and a detailed study of inspection marks on the most widely known Types 14 and 94 is included. An appendix on valuation has also been added, using a relative scale that should remain relevant despite inflationary pressures. For the firearms collector, enthusiast, historian or dealer, this is the most complete and up-to-date work on Japanese military handguns ever written. Like its predecessor, it is certain to become a classic firearms reference and a benchmark for further research.Direct shipped in U.S. via UPS by Publisher in 1-2 Days unless otherwise noted (NOT Shipped via Book Rate!) - Added UPS shipping charge will apply - Overseas Shipping on this via Airmail Only! - Publisher's List Price = $79.95 - Our Price - $61.80

(Hump) Ethell, Jeff / Downie, Don - FLYING THE HUMP IN ORIGINAL WORLD WAR II COLOR - Motorbooks Intl - ISBN# 0760319154 - BRAND NEW Oversized Softcover - 168pp - Index - Tons of Incredible Wartime Photos - The capture of the Burma Road by the Japanese during World War II forced U.S. airmen to fly hundreds of missions a day into China in an airlift of epic proportions. Having to fly over the towering Himalayan Mountains, the pilots came to know this route as flying the hump. The Hump was a pioneering aviation operation that had just about everything working against it: the forbidding mountains, the worst flying weather in the world, deadly Japanese fighters, the crudest of navigational aids, unproven aircraft, and inexperienced flight and maintenance crews. Military commanders considered a flight over the Hump to be more hazardous than a bombing mission over Europe. More than 1,300 pilots and crew members were lost and more than 500 transport planes crashed trying to make it. Flying the Hump contains period color photographs depicting the lives of the pilots and their planes during this dangerous operation. Many Hump pilots shared their personal recollections of rare photos and many untold stories to comprise this book of seat-of-the-pants flying. 170 color photos, 10 diagrams - Publisher's List Price = $26.95 - Our Price - $23.45

Ewing, Steve - THACH WEAVE : THE LIFE OF JIMMIE THACH- Naval Institute Press - ISBN# 1591142482 - BRAND NEW Hardcover with a Dust Jacket (Protected in a New Brodart Dust Jacket Cover) - 338pp - Notes - Biblio - Index - Maps - Photos - This biography completes a trilogy on the three Navy fighter pilots Jimmie Thach, Butch O'Hare, and Jimmy Flatley who developed sweeping changes in aerial combat tactics during World War II. While O'Hare and Flatley were instrumental in making the "weave" a success, Thach was its theoretical innovator, and his use of the tactic in combat at Midway documented its practical application. This portrait of the famous pilot provides a memorable account of how Thach, convinced that his Wildcat was no match for Japan's formidable Zero, found a way to give his squadron a fighting chance. Using matchsticks on his kitchen table, he devised a solution that came to be called the Thach Weave. But as Steve Ewing is quick to point out, this was not Thach's sole contribution to the Navy. Throughout his forty-year career, Thach provided answers to multiple challenges facing the Navy, and his ideas were implemented service wide. A highly decorated ace, Thach was an early test pilot, a creative task force operations officer in the last year of World War II, and an outstanding carrier commander in the Korean War. During the Cold War, he contributed to advances in antisubmarine warfare. This biography shows him to be a charismatic leader interested in everyone around him, regardless of rank or status. His dry sense of humor and constant smile attracted people from all walks of life, and he was a popular figure in Hollywood. Thach remains a hero among naval aviators, his most famous combat tactic still used by today's pilots - List Price = $34.95 - Our Price - $28.95

Each Lancaster was equipped with the revolutionary bouncing bomb designed by the inventor Barnes Wallis, creator of the Wellington bomber. Designed to skip over the surface of the water, the bombs rotated at 500 rpm. They had to be dropped at a speed of 240 miles an hour and were set to explode while sinking to the base of the dam's retaining wall. It took five attempts to breach the Moehne Dam. Gibson then led the three remaining Lancasters to attack the Eder Dam - Also iIncludes photos from the movie The Dam Busters - Overseas Shipping Extra due to Size! The author has gone to extraordinary lengths to locate and interview surviving members of the Leibstandarte, including the central figure of this narrative, SS-Brigadefhrer und Generalmajor der Waffen-SS Wilhelm Mohnke, who was with the Leibstandarte from the very beginning serving on the first guard mount at the Reich Chancellery in Berlin to the very end when he was in charge of the final defense of the governmental seat of power. He provides fascinating insights into the inner circle around the Fhrer and, indeed, Hitler's final moments and what transpired after his suicide. In addition, 62 other soldiers are profiled generally in their own words and represent all of the combat formations of the division: Artillery, Infantry, Armor, Reconnaissance, Air Defense and Engineers. Also unique among publications concerning the Leibstandarte is the appearance of nearly 700 photographs, 165 images of award documents and more than 70 other illustrations, with almost all of the pre-war and wartime photographs having been previously unpublished! In addition to never-before-seen candid images of Hitler, Dietrich and a number of other leading military personalities, there are exceptional photographs of the forces in the field and with their weapons and equipment - Publisher's List = $95 - Our Price - $88

FitzPatrick's service at Clark Field in the Philippines, the brutal fighting on Bataan, and the harrowing details of his time as a Japanese POW are detailed. Interspersed are his thoughts on U.S. preparations for the Pacific war, his Japanese captors, and the American, Filipino and Japanese men and women who risked their lives to ease the harsh conditions in the camps - Publisher's List Price = $25 -Our Price - $22.50
(11thAirborne) Flanagan Jr. , Edward M. (Lt Gen)- THE ANGELS, A HISTORY OF THE 11TH AIRBORNE DIVISION 1943-1946 - Battery Press - ISBN# 0898391172 - BRAND NEW Hardcover - 192 pages, 146 photos, 25 maps - Reprint of Unit History originally published in 1947 by the Infantry Journal Press, this is the first official history for the 11th Airborne Division in World War II. The 11th Airborne Division arrived in New Guinea, 25 May 1944, and continued training, leaving for the Philippines 11 November 1944. It landed amphibiously, not by jump, on Leyte, 18 November 1944, between Abuyog and Tarragona, 40 miles south of Tacloban, and pushing inland, cleared the Ormoc-Burauen supply trail, an important Japanese combat lifeline. The 11th's general mission was to seize and secure within its zone all exits from the mountains into. Leyte Valley and to secure the western exits from the mountains into the west coastal corridor to assist the attack of the 7th Division toward Ormoc. On 6 December 1944 the paratroopers of the 11th found themselves fighting Japanese parachutists who had landed near the San Pablo airstrip. The Japanese were wiped out in a 5-day engagement. In a continuous series of combat actions, Japanese resistance was reduced on Leyte by the end of December 1944. Heavy resistance was met at Rock Hill, which finally fell, 18 December; a sleeping enemy was caught off guard at Hacksaw Hill, 23 December, and suffered heavy losses. During January 1945 the Division rested and staged for a landing on Luzon. While other American troops were driving on Manila from the north, the 11th Airborne made an amphibious landing 60 miles south of Manila, 31 January 1945, at Nasugbu, and began to drive north. The first combat jump by an element of the division in the war, that of the 511th Parachute Infantry Regiment on Tagaytay Ridge, 3 February 1945, met no resistance. The 511th crossed the Paranaque River 5 February, and reached Manila, meeting fierce Japanese resistance. Nichols Field was taken, 12 February, and Fort McKinley was flanked, 12-16 February, and finally taken, 17 February. A combined air and sea assault liberated more than 2,000 American and European interned nationals at Los Banos, 23 February 1945. With Manila declared secure, the Division reduced a strong ring of enemy outposts between Lake Taal and Laguna de Bay, and occupied towns along Highway No. 1, cutting off the Bicol Peninsula. In April the 11th took part in clearing out remaining enemy resistance in Batangas Province, and by 1 May, all resistance in southern Luzon had ended. The final operation of the Division was conducted on 23 June 1945, in conjunction with the advance of the 37th Division in northern Luzon. A Task Force was formed and jumped on Camalaniugan Airfield, south of Aparri. The force attacked and made contact with the 37th Infantry Division, 26 June 1945, between Alcala and the Paret River. In July 1945 the Division trained; in August it was transported by air to Honshu, Japan, via Okinawa, for occupation. duty. Nickname: The Angels. Shoulder patch: A red circle on a royal blue shield containing a white numeral "11" ; the circle is bordered in white with white wings raising obliquely from the white periphery; in the top arc, the white letters "Airborne" are alined with shape of arc. - List Price = $39.95 - Our Price - $36
