(RedStorm) Glantz, David M. - RED STORM OVER THE BALKANS : THE FAILED SOVIET INVASION OF ROMANIA, SPRING 1944- Univ Kansas Press - ISBN# 0700614656 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 448pp - Notes - Biblio - Index - Photos - Maps - Germany's Eastern Front in World War II saw many campaigns and battles that have been "forgotten" by a Soviet Union that tried to hide its military failures. The Red Army's invasion of Romania in April and May 1944 was one such campaign, which produced nearly 200,000 casualties and tarnished the reputations of its commanders. The redoubtable David Glantz, the world's leading authority on the Soviet military in World War II, now restores this tale to its proper place in the annals of World War II. Working from newly available Russian and long-neglected German archives plus Red Army unit histories and commanders' memoirs Glantz reconstructs an imposing mosaic that reveals the immense scope and ambitious intent of the first Iasi-Kishinev offensive. His re-creation shows that Stalin was not as preoccupied with a direct route to Berlin as he was with a "broad front" strategy designed to gain territory and find vulnerable points in Germany's extended lines of defense. If successful, the invasion would have also eliminated Romania as Germany's ally, cut off the vital Ploiesti oilfields, and provided a base from which to consolidate Soviet power throughout the Balkans. Glantz discloses General Ivan Konev's strategic plan as the 2nd Ukrainian Front prepared its Iasi offensive and fought a climactic battle with the German Eighth Army and its Romanian allies in the Tirgu-Frumos region in early May, then the regrouping of General Rodion Malinovsky's 3rd Ukrainian Front for its decisive offensive toward Kishinev, which aborted in the face of a skillful counterstroke by a threadbare German Sixth Army. Glantz describes how the Wehrmacht, with a nucleus of combat veterans, was able to beat back Soviet forces hampered by spring floods, while already fragile Soviet logistical support was further undermined by the Wehrmacht's scorched-earth strategy. Although Konev's and Malinovsky's offensives failed, the Red Army managed to inflict heavy losses on Axis forces, exacerbating the effects of Germany's defeats in the Ukraine and making it more difficult for the Wehrmacht to contain the Soviet juggernaut's ultimate advance toward Berlin. - List Price = $39.95 - Our Price - $36.99

Haasler, Timm - HOLD THE WESTWALL OR PERISH WITH IT - THE HISTORY OF PANZER-BRIGADE 105, SEPTEMBER 1944
- Fedorowicz Publishing - ISBN# 9780921991885 - BRAND NEW Hardcover - 582 pages, 147 photographs, 22 maps and extensive charts and documentation - Hold the Westwall tells the story of an experiment that failed: The creation of separate armored brigades within the Panzertruppe in 1944. Formed at the direction of Hitler in response to the dramatic situation that was developing on the Eastern Front in the summer of 1944, the brigades 10 in all were to be a form of field-army-level ready reserve and strike force. These brigades, which featured a tank battalion, a mechanized infantry battalion, a company of mechanized combat engineers as well as a substantial amount of organic antiaircraft firepower, could have been the "iron fist" envisioned by Hitler had they not been so hastily formed and then committed in ways never doctrinally called for - Publisher's List = $64 - Our Price - $59

(KillingGround) Hallas, James H. - KILLING GROUND ON OKINAWA : THE BATTLE FOR SUGAR LOAF HILL - Naval Institute Press - ISBN# 159114356X - BRAND NEW Softcover - 237pp - Biblio - Index - Maps - Photos - A key point in the Japanese defensive line on Okinawa in May 1945, Sugar Loaf Hill was the site of a tenacious seven-day battle that inflicted heavy casualties on the U.S. Marines attacking the hill. In this emotionally compelling account of the fierce fight, James H. Hallas chronicles the extraordinary courage and tactical skills of the 6th Marine Division's junior officers and enlisted men as they captured a network of sophisticated Japanese defenses on Sugar Loaf while under heavy artillery fire from surrounding hills. To give human dimensions to the story, the author draws on his many interviews with participants and skillfully weaves together their individual stories of the sustained close-quarter fighting that claimed more than 2,000 Marine casualties. Pushed to their physical and moral limits during eleven attempts to capture the fifty-foot-high 300-yard-long hill, the Marines' proved their uncommon valor to be a common virtue, and this detailed record of their courage and commitment assures them a permanent place in history. - List Price = $19.95 - Our Price - $19.95

Hart analyzes the methods the Allies used to improve their military effectiveness. Haycock, D. J. - EISENHOWER AND THE ART OF WARFARE - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 078641894X - BRAND NEW Softcover - 233pp - Index - Notes - Biblio - Photos - Beginning with his appointment and the planning of the invasion of North Africa (codename "TORCH"), this work suggests that Eisenhower's involvement in political situations weakened his effectiveness on the battlefield. One chapter focuses on the poorly organized Allied air command in Algeria and discusses Eisenhower's reluctance to be part of a unified air command. Another records his appointment to the position of Supreme Allied Commander North African Theater of Operations, and also explores Eisenhower's inconsistencies and indecisiveness during the planning of the invasion of Sicily. Chapter Seven covers the much-disputed "DRAGOON" operation the invasion of Southern France to the detriment of the Italian campaign and Eisenhower's insistence on "broad front" warfare and resistance to the idea of indirect attack. Much of the book provides detailed insight into the rationale both sound and questionable that was behind many of the strategic decisions made by Eisenhower during World War II and suggests that with more experienced leadership, the conclusion could have come much sooner and with fewer casualties - Publisher's List Price = $35 -Our Price - $25

This exhaustively researched and definitive account of one of America's premier Army Air Force bombardment units follows the 22nd Bomb Group from its Stateside prewar formation and training through its deployment to Northern Australia during the earliest days of WW II, through the end of the conflict on the island of Okinawa. Initially equipped with the B-26 Marauder, the 22nd BG pioneered the Pacific island-hopping route to Australia, then was one of the first American combat units to strike back at the Japanese in the skies over Rabaul and New Guinea. Later the 22nd partially re-equipped with the B-25 Mitchell, before becoming a B-24 Liberator Heavy Bombardment Unit and fighting its way across the Southwest Pacific to the doorstep of Japan. Revenge of the Red Raiders features over 600 pages of text and is massively illustrated by more than 1000 color and black and white photos, 4 magnificent color paintings by renowned aviation artist Jack Fellows, 48 full-color aircraft profiles, by Steve W. Ferguson and 16 detailed maps, showing all bases, the location of every mission flown, and the site of each aircraft lost. The chronological text is supplemented by definitive appendices of leaders, casualties, every combat aircraft flown, an encyclopedic history of the unit's aircraft and markings and insignias. Compiled from wartime records of the US, Japan and Australia, supplemented by the personal experiences of hundreds of the units veterans, this book stands as a landmark in aviation history. (TA152) Hitchcock, Thomas - THE FOCKE-WULF TA 152- Eagle Editions - ISBN# 9780914144533 -BRAND NEW Oversized Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 2010 Printing - 208 pages - 180 photos, 40 color photos, 36 color illustrations, 75 drawing plus 19 tables and charts - The Focke-Wulf Ta 152 was a high-performance airplane produced in small numbers that appeared late in the war. It was the culmination of a research and development program that brought together an advanced high-performance engine within an innovative airframe. These, in conjunction with an entirely new wing, allowed the Ta 152 to out-perform its contemporaries at all altitudes. Presented are five enlightening and lavishly illustrated chapters, each woven around a twelve month period beginning in 1941. Read about test pilots and operational crews who flew the fighter into combat. Too, learn why the Germans rushed the Ta 152 into production while at the same time it was undergoing continuous testing and evaluation. Only one example of the Ta 152 survives and is part of the unrestored collection of WW2 fighters at the National Air and space Museum. Many of the photos in this title have never been previously published. The descriptive line drawings of complete three views, sectionals, charts, detail views and general arrangement drawings including maps. Full color profiles by leading illustrators detail camouflage and markings as interpreted from the provided photos. Four appendices include: camouflage, insignia and markings; production and Werknummern; specifications, weights, performance and equipment; pilot operating instructions and systems. This history of the Ta 152 and its lesser known cousin the Ta 153 is also a colorful journey into the Third Reich. It occurs in a time when the political and military interests of the dictatorship were clouded under a veil of self-deception. It is a story of strong rivalries, of divided loyalties and outright survival, all of which ultimately proved disastrous for the Nazi regime. This story also addresses a cast of characters that include the chief of state, his deputies, and the chief executive officers of competing aircraft companies, designers, engineers, test pilots and front-line fighter units. - $175

Husemann, Friedrich - IN GOOD FAITH, THE HISTORY OF THE 4 SS-POLIZEI-PANZER-GRENADIER DIVISION, VOLUME 2: 1943-1945 - Fedorowicz Publishing - ISBN# 9780921991960 -BRAND NEW Linen Finish Hardcover issued without jacket - 600 pp -The second volume of this set on the Polizei-Division takes up the divisional history at the beginning of 1943, and the story of 2 battalions that were sent to the Don Front at the end of 1942. The division fought in Russia through 1943 near Leningrad, participating in the Second and Third Ladoga Battles. It also was at the Oranienbaum Pocket, at the Wolchow, near Nowgorod and then retreated to the Narwa. In April 1943 it began converting into a Panzergrenadier-Division and some of its elements were sent west to training grounds in Poland and Czechoslovakia. As 1943 wore on, the division was shifted around Leningrad to meet Soviet incursions. In the fall, more units were withdrawn for conversion, and then some of them were sent to Greece for garrison duties. At one point in time, the division was in three places; most of it in northern Russia near Leningrad, a part in southern Russia near Tscherkassy, and the converting elements in Greece. Eventually, the division was united in Greece in April 1944. There, it welcomed its Sturmgeschutz battalion. The division trained and carried out anti-partisan operations until the end of August 1944. When Romania defected to the Soviets in late August, the division retreated from Greece through Serbia and Rumania into Hungary. There it fought in the defense of eastern Hungary and later participated in the attempted relief of Budapest. After Budapest fell, the Polizei Division was transferred in January 1945 through Slovakia to eastern Pommerania (Stettin). When Pommerania was cut off by the Russians, the division fought defensively and retreated east toward the Gotenhafen-Danzig area. It was evacuated to Hela by ferry and then from Hela to Swinemunde on ships. It defended western Pommerania, and then northwest of Berlin. It retreated west toward Hamburg (Ludwiglust) at the end of April and surrendered on May 2, 1945 to the British - Publisher's List = $70 - Our Price - $60.99

Mountain troops even formed part of Rommel?s famed Afrikakorps. During the war, the army alone formed a total of eleven mountain divisions, plus independent battalions and units. The accomplishments of the ?Men of the Edelweis? are still held in high regard by historians and military experts. Armed forces and special units worldwide use their alpine and combat abilities as an example, for in mountain fighting the weather and the terrain often caused more casualties than the enemy. Through impressive photographs and brief, insightful text, this chronicle offers the reader and extraordinary view into the world of these elite troops, who were always committed where the outcome hung in the balance -Direct shipped in U.S. via UPS by Publisher in 1-2 Days unless otherwise noted (NOT Shipped via Book Rate!) - Added UPS shipping charge will apply - Overseas Shipping on this via Airmail Only! - Publisher's List Price = $59.95 - Our Price - $54.95

R. - DANGER FORWARD, THE STORY OF THE FIRST DIVISION IN WORLD WAR II - Battery Press - ISBN# 0898390338 -BRAND NEW Oversized Hardcover issued without jacket - Reprint of 1947 Original - 479 pages, 115 photos, 19 maps - A regular army unit, the First Infantry Division was one of the first combat formations to move overseas in WWII. Overseas: 7 August 1942. Campaigns: Algeria-French Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, ArdennesAlsace, Central Europe. Days of Combat: 443. The 1st Infantry Division saw its first combat in World War II in North Africa, landing at Oran and taking part in the initial fighting, 8-10 November 1942. Elements then took part in seesaw combat at Maktar, Medjez el Bab, Kasserine Pass, Gafsa, El Guettar, Beja, and Mateur, 21 January-9 May 1943, helping secure Tunisia. The First was the first ashore in the invasion of Sicily, 10 July 1943 ; it fought a series of short, fierce battles on the island's tortuous terrain. When that campaign was over, the Division returned to England to prepare for the Normandy invasion. The First Division assaulted Omaha Beach on D-day, 6 June 1944, some units suffering 30 percent casualties in the first hour, and secured Formigny and Caumont in the beachhead. The Division followed up the St. Lo break-through with an attack on Marigny, 27 July 1944, and then drove across France in a continuous offensive, reaching the German border at Aachen in September. The Division laid siege to Aachen, taking the city after a direct assault, 21 October 1944. The First then attacked east of Aachen through Hurtgen Forest, driving to the Roer, and moved to a rest area 7 December for its first real rest in 6 months' combat, when the von Rundstedt offensive suddenly broke loose, 16 December. The Division raced to the Ardennes, and fighting continuously from 17 December 1944 to 28 January 1945, helped blunt and turn back the German offensive. Thereupon, the Division attacked and again breached the Siegfried Line, fought across the Roer, 23 February 1945, and drove on to the Rhine, crossing at the Remagen bridgehead, 15-16 March 1945. The Division broke out of the bridgehead, took part in the encirclement of the Ruhr Pocket, captured Paderborn, pushed through the Harz Mountains, and was in Czechoslovakia, at Kinsperk, Sangerberg, and Mnichov, when the war in Europe ended. Nicknames: The Red One; The Fighting First. Slogan: No mission too difficult, no sacrifice too great, duty first. Shoulder patch: Red Arabic numeral "I" on solid olive drab background - List Price = $49.95 - Our Price - $45

(AfAmCas) Knoblock, Glenn A. - AFRICAN AMERICAN WORLD WAR II CASUALTIES AND DECORATIONS IN THE NAVY, COAST GUARD AND MERCHANT MARINE - A COMPREHENSIVE RECORD- McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786434732 - BRAND NEW Laminated Full-Size Softcover - 580pp - Photos - Appendices - Biblio - Index - This book is an account of the 2,445 African American men who were killed or wounded or decorated during World War II in the Navy, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine. Because of the nature of the military's racial policies, most of these men served either in the Steward's Branch or in subordinate positions. As a result, the role of these fighting men has largely been ignored. This book attempts to rectify this oversight, documenting each man lost with groupings primarily by ship and by shore service, as well as separate chapters for those lost at Pearl Harbor and those who died in the explosion at Port Chicago, an incident which accounted for about 20 percent of all deaths among African American seamen during the war. Information of a more personal nature about each man is often included, highlighted by input from surviving black veterans as well as recollections from several families whose sons, fathers, and brothers were lost in the war. Also featured are several African Americans who were decorated posthumously for acts of bravery and heroism during their service, including Navy Cross winners Dorie Miller, William Pinckney and Leonard Roy Harmon - Publisher's List Price = $65 -Our Price - $61.95

(FRW) - FINDING A FALLEN HERO : THE DEATH OF A BALL TURRET GUNNER- Univ Oklahoma Press - ISBN# 0806138920 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 256pp - Photos - Notes - Index - To all appearances, Anthony "Tony" Korkuc was just another casualty of World War II. A gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress, Korkuc was lost on a bombing mission over Germany, and his family believed that his body had never been recovered. But when they learned in 1995 that Tony was actually buried at Arlington National Cemetery, his nephew Bob Korkuc set out on a seven-year quest to learn the true fate of an uncle he never knew. Finding a Fallen Hero is a compelling story that blends a wartime drama with a primer on specialized research. Author Bob Korkuc initially set out to learn how his Uncle Tony came to rest at Arlington. In the process, he also unraveled the mystery of what occurred over the skies of Germany half a century ago. - List Price = $24.95 - Our Price - $21.95

Kuhl, George C. - WRONG PLACE, WRONG TIME - THE 305TH BOMB GROUP & THE 2ND SCHWEINFURT RAID - Schiffer Publications - ISBN# 0887404456 -BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 304pp - Notes - Biblio - Index - Photos - Maps - This is true story of the second raid on Schweinfurt, Germany by the Eighth Air Force 1st and 3rd Bombardment Divisions on 14 October 1943. On this day, the Eighth Air Force lost air superiority to the German Luftwaffe in a continuous air battle that lasted over three hours. Many refer to it as the greatest one-day air battle of World War II. Wrong Place, Wrong Time is a study of the 1st Bombardment Division and specifically the 305th Bomb Group on that fateful day. Record numbers of German fighters swarmed over the unescorted B-17s and their crews. Compelling new evidence never before published indicates that mistakes and poor leadership by several air commanders within the 1st Division caused unnecessary losses for a number of bombers and their crews. This, together with major new revelations by crew members of the 305th who flew the mission, shed light on why the 1st Division lost 45 out of 60 B-17s that day. Information for this book comes from the National Archives, the US Air Force Historical Research Center, overseas sources, and 53 surviving 305th crew members who flew this mission. George C. Kuhl was a pilot in the 305th Bomb Group during World War II. (585 Raids) Kunevicius, Alex - 585 RAIDS AND COUNTING - MEMOIR OF AN AMERICAN SOLDIER IN THE SOLOMON ISLANDS, 1942-1945- McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786464463 - BRAND NEW Full-Sized Laminated Softcover - 207pp - Photos - Index - After receiving his draft notice on March 5, 1941, 21-year old Alex Kunevicius harbored dreams of joining George Patton's First Armored Division. Instead, he was placed in a noncombat Army Ordnance Company and taught to repair weapons, an assignment in which he initially saw little glory. After Pearl Harbor, however, he and his fellow technicians proved indispensable by keeping American guns firing during the invasion of island after island in the South Pacific. In this memoir, Kunevicius recounts his experiences as an ordnance man, from the ocean voyage to the Pacific Theater to years fighting heat and disease as his unit provided critical maintenance for assaults on Guadalcanal, the Solomon Islands, and other targets while withstanding endless air raids and shelling. His recollections offer a vivid portrait of life behind the lines and reveal the enormous value of support positions to the war effort. - Publisher's List Price = $35 -Our Price - $33.50

(MilVehicles) LePage, Jean-Denis - GERMAN MILITARY VEHICLES OF WORLD WAR II - An Illustrated Guide to Cars, Trucks, Half-Tracks, Motorcycles, Amphibious Vehicles and Others - McFarland Publishing - ISBN# 9780786428984 - BRAND NEW Laminated Softcover - Detailed line drawings - Biblio - Index - Glossary - This volume presents a cross-section of the most common transport vehicles produced and used by the German army. Tanks plus auxiliary vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, vans, ambulances, trucks and tractors made it possible for the troops to keep moving. These lightly armored or unarmored vehicles aka "soft skins" operated behind the front lines, maintaining supply lines, connecting armies with their home bases, and ultimately determining the outcome of battle. Beginning with the development of military vehicles in the early 1930s, this volume discusses the ways in which this new technology influenced and, to some extent, facilitated Hitler's program of rearmament. Nomenclature, standard equipment, camouflage and the combat roles of the various vehicles are thoroughly examined. Individual vehicle types are arranged and discussed by the following classifications: cars and motorcycles; trucks and tractors; half-tracks and wheeled combat vehicles. Accompanied by well-researched, detailed line drawings, each section deals with a number of individual vehicles, describing their design, manufacture and specific use - Publisher's List Price = $49.95 -Our Price - $44.95

Details on the unit as follows. Activated: 1 July 1940. Overseas: 24 April 1943. Campaigns: Aleutian Islands, Leyte, Eastern Mandates, Ryukyus. Days of combat: 208. Elements of the 7th Infantry Division first saw combat in the amphibious assault on Attu, western-most Japanese entrenchment in the Aleutian chain. Elements landed, 11 May 1943, and fought a bitter battle over freezing tundra against fanatically resisting Japanese, finally defeating the Japanese at Chicago Harbor. In August 1943 elements of the Division took part in the assault on Kiska, only to find the island deserted by the Japanese. With the Aleutians secured, the Division moved to Hawaii, where it trained in amphibious landing technique and in jungle warfare. On 31 January 1944 the Division landed on islands in the Kwajalein Atoll in conjunction with the 4th Marine Division, and in a week of heavy fighting, wrested them from the Japanese. Elements took part in the capture of Engebi in the Eniwetok Atoll, 18 February 1944. The Division then moved to Oahu, T. H., remaining there until mid-September when it sailed to join the assault on the Philippines. On 20 October 1944, the Division made an assault landing at Dulag, Leyte, and after heavy fighting secured airstrips at Dulag, San Pablo, and Buri. The troops moved north to take Dagami, 29 October, and then shifted to the west coast of Leyte, 26 November, and attacked north toward Ormoc, securing Valencia, 25 December. An amphibious landing by the 77th Infantry Division effected the capture of Ormoc, 11 December 1944, and the 7th joined in its occupation. Mopping up operations continued until early February 1945. Next D-day for the Division was 1 April 1945, when it made an assault landing on Okinawa. It drove from the west to the east coast on the first day and engaged in a savage 51-day battle in the hills of southern Okinawa. Shoulder patch: Red circular patch bearing black hour glass which is formed by inverted "7" and superimposed "7". - $125

In addition to the threat faced from the Germans, Albania was engaged in a civil war between the Nazi-sponsored Ballists and the Communist partisans led by Enver Hoxha. While America was reluctant to get involved in the civil conflict, the United States was naturally inclined to lend support to whoever fought the Nazis even if that meant an alliance with the Communists. On a cold November night in 1943, Dale McAdoo (code named Tank) secretly landed on the Albanian coast with a team of OSS (Office of Strategic Services) agents, including Ismail Carapizzi, an Albanian guide and interpreter who would later be murdered. McAdoo's team, the first of many to follow, set up a base of operations in a deep water level cave on the rocky Albanian coast that served the OSS as it carried out its mission of gathering intelligence to support the Allied war effort and harass the Germans. McAdoo was joined by Captain Tom Stefan (code name Art), an Albanian-speaking OSS officer from Boston, whose assignment was to join Hoxha at his remote mountain headquarters and bond with the reclusive Communist leader to benefit the OSS. This volume describes how the OSS aided the Communist-led partisans in an attempt to weaken the Nazi cause in Albania and neighboring Italy. The book presents an in-depth look at the small core of hardened men who comprised these highly specialized teams, including each member's background and his special fitness for his wartime role behind enemy lines. The American and British presence in Albania during World War II and the later deterioration of Hoxha's relations with Captain Tom Stefan and the OSS mission are discussed in detail. Firsthand interviews with still-living participants and extensive onsite research make this book a unique resource for a little-known dramatic piece of World War II history - Publisher's List Price = $35 -Our Price - $32
