(Colgan) Colgan, William B. - WORLD WAR II FIGHTER-BOMBER PILOT, VALIANT MULTI-MISSION AIR WAR, WHAT IT WAS LIKE - Heritage Books - ISBN# 9780788445316 - BRAND NEW Softcover - 232 pp - Fighter-bomber flying and fighting originated in World War I as pursuit pilots strafed and dropped small bombs on the enemy below. However, it was in World War II that the term "fighter-bomber" emerged, as American fighter pilots combined combat actions of dogfight, bomb/rocket, and strafe into extensive "fighter-bomber" operations. These operations became universally recognized for their major role in that war and in air power ever since. An official news release at the end of World War II stated: "Fighter Squadron Commander, Major Colgan, a top fighter pilot in Europe, in combat August 1943-May 45, CO a full year he accumulated more missions, decorations, narrow escapes, and friends (ground forces) than the vast majority of other pilots in the war." His vivid account here of courageous fighter-bomber action on varied, deadly, low-altitude missions was written for the general public. It has drawn wide praise as a "gripping, magnificent" story of people at war and has been acclaimed as an "accurate, definitive, vital, long overdue" history. It is often cited as the prime, and now a most timely, book on the heritage of current U.S. multi-role fighter pilots/crews and planes: the F-15E, F-16, F/A-18, F-22, and F-35-today's "fighter-bombers." Colonel Colgan also served in combat in Korea and Vietnam, held key positions in requirements for and test of new fighters/fighter-bombers, and retired as Commander, 326th Air Division, Hawaii. He was inducted into The Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame, 1996, "Top Fighter-Bomber Pilot." In this book he tells far more than ever done before about World War II fighter-bomber pilots and unit ground personnel: their lives; their war; their dedication, duty, valor, and sacrifice. This is their story and legacy - List Price = $24 - Our Price - $22.50

Having to fly over the towering Himalayan Mountains, the pilots came to know this route as flying the hump. The Hump was a pioneering aviation operation that had just about everything working against it: the forbidding mountains, the worst flying weather in the world, deadly Japanese fighters, the crudest of navigational aids, unproven aircraft, and inexperienced flight and maintenance crews. Military commanders considered a flight over the Hump to be more hazardous than a bombing mission over Europe. More than 1,300 pilots and crew members were lost and more than 500 transport planes crashed trying to make it. Flying the Hump contains period color photographs depicting the lives of the pilots and their planes during this dangerous operation. Many Hump pilots shared their personal recollections of rare photos and many untold stories to comprise this book of seat-of-the-pants flying. 170 color photos, 10 diagrams - Publisher's List Price = $26.95 - Our Price - $23.45

Awarded the Knight's Cross in April 1944, he claimed his 100th kill in June of that year, then barely 48 hours later shot down 12 aircraft in one day - a record never achieved by any other Arctic Sea pilot. He took command of the third Staffel of JG 7, and his success in the aerial theatre was unsurpassed when he brought down four B-17 bombers while on a transit flight. Shortly afterwards, meeting one of the bomber's escort fighters in combat, his fuel system exploded and he had to bail out. Walter Schuck's war was over, after more than 500 front-line sorties and 206 confirmed kills. In a gripping narrative, the author helps us to understand why he and his colleagues were prepared to lay down their lives for their people and their country. - $75

(Luftwaffe) Williamson, Gordon - LUFTWAFFE HANDBOOK 1935-1945 - Sutton Press - ISBN# 9780750941198 - BRAND NEW Oversized Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 275pp - Index - Glossary - Biblio - Photos - Reichmarschall Hermann Goring's Luftwaffe was the most pro-Nazi of the three services. As well as aviation units, the Luftwaffe included airborne forces and units of ground troops. The Luftwaffe was at the forefront of the dramatic German Blitzkrieg successes of the early part of the war, with dive-bombers working in close co-operation with armoured units on the ground. As the tide of the war turned, the Luftwaffe was unsuccessful in preventing the destruction of German cities and industry by Allied bombers, despite the development of a highly effective night-fighter force. The latter years of the war saw the development of new, technologically advanced aircraft that were light years ahead of anything the Allies were considering, such as jet fighters, rocket-propelled aircraft, 'flying wings' and many others. As well as examining the Luftwaffe's organisation and command structure, strategy, tactics, research and development, Gordon Williamson provides brief biographies of its most important figures, from field marshals to individual fighter pilots. He also surveys key aircraft types, uniforms and insignia to provide a comprehensive summary of the Luftwaffe in action between 1935 and 1945 - List Price = $58.95 - Our Price - $52.95

(BlackCross3) Bergstrom, Christer - BLACK CROSS RED STAR : VOL 3 - THE AIR WAR OVER THE EASTERN FRONT - Eagle Editions - ISBN# 0976103443 - BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket (Protected in a New Brodart Cover) - Never before has the history of the air war on the Eastern Front been written in such depth, in such detail, and so carefully balanced between both sides. The air war on the Eastern Front in World War II was history's largest and longest air campaign. Nevertheless, it has been one of the least known and least understood chapters of aviation history. This is because prior to the release of the Black Cross/Red Star series, publications on this immense subject have been based on material taken almost exclusively from the German side. Black Cross/Red Star, presented in several photo-laden volumes, has evolved as the most complete and detailed series ever published on the air war on the Eastern Front. Volume 3, has been subtitled Everything for Stalingrad and covers the German summer offensive in 1942; the subsequent fierce air battles over the Caucasus; the Luftwaffe's onslaught on Convoy PQ-17; the hard air war over the Central and Northern combat zones, when the Soviets launched their relief offensives in the summer and fall of 1942; and, mainly, the huge Air Battle over Stalingrad. Similar to Volume 2, Volume 3 will contain a large number of photos and 37 high-quality aircraft color profiles, by one of the best aircraft profile artists in the world--Claes Sundin - $70

(Falck) Bergstrom, Christer - WOLFGANG FALCK: THE HAPPY FALCON - Eagle Editions - ISBN# 0972106014 -BRAND NEW Oversized Hardcover with Dust Jacket - 200pp - Over 250 Photos - Wolfgang Falck found himself in the most unique position when German Luftwaffe high command decided to form a night fighting force. Because of his leadership capabilities and knowledge of military tactics plus the fact that he was a very capable fighter pilot, Falck was selected to create the Nachtjagd. Known affectionately by his men as the Father of the Night Fighters, he continues to wear this mantle to this day. From his earliest recollections, Falck wanted a military career. Little did he realize as a youth, that he would be come an elite fighter pilot, or Jagdflieger. Here in his autobiography Wolfgang Falck provides the reader with a fascinating behind the scenes personal view of life in the leadership of the German Luftwaffe, its successes, its operations and failures, the interrelationship of personalities involved and ultimately the end of WWII and Hitler's Third Reich. Falck brings the reader an upfront and personal view of his experiences in the last desperate days and on through his immediate post war survival. In the years following the end of WW II, Falck was employed by major aerospace companies, North American Aviation and later Mc Donnell Douglas, both firms with offices located in Bonn-Bad Godesberg, Germany. After retirement, Falck made his home in the beautiful Alpen village in Austria, where he lives today, giving thanks to God for his adventure though a fascinating life - Publisher's List Price = $45 - Our Price - $43

(VF17) Cook, Lee - THE SKULL & CROSSBONES SQUADRON - VF-17 IN WORLD WAR II - Schiffer Publications - BRAND NEW Oversized Hardcover in dust jacket - 240pp - This is the true story of one of the most successful of all United States Navy Fighting Squadrons in World War II. They were the top guns of their day and came to be feared by the Japanese fighter pilots who described them as "attacks on us by wolves." Their victorious achievements are as follows: 152 Japanese planes destroyed in the air and two on the ground in only 76 days of combat; five small enemy cargo ships and 17 barges carrying troops and supplies sent to the bottom of the sea. No bomber escorted by them was lost to enemy aircraft and no ship covered by them was ever hit by bomb or aerial torpedo. The squadron had thirteen aces and two more who later went on to become aces with VF-84 (combat veterans of VF-17 composed the nucleus of this squadron). They were the first Navy squadron into combat action with the new Chance Vought Corsair and were instrumental in proving this powerful new fighter to the Navy. VF-17 were known as the Skull and Crossbones squadron and "Blackburn's Irregulars" - having adopted the old pirates ensign of the Jolly Roger as the squadron insignia; since World War II they have become known as the "Jolly Rogers." The Skull and Crossbones Squadron is a mission by mission chronicle of all the squadron's great air battles. Ewing, Steve - THACH WEAVE : THE LIFE OF JIMMIE THACH- Naval Institute Press - ISBN# 1591142482 - BRAND NEW Hardcover with a Dust Jacket (Protected in a New Brodart Dust Jacket Cover) - 338pp - Notes - Biblio - Index - Maps - Photos - This biography completes a trilogy on the three Navy fighter pilots Jimmie Thach, Butch O'Hare, and Jimmy Flatley who developed sweeping changes in aerial combat tactics during World War II. While O'Hare and Flatley were instrumental in making the "weave" a success, Thach was its theoretical innovator, and his use of the tactic in combat at Midway documented its practical application. This portrait of the famous pilot provides a memorable account of how Thach, convinced that his Wildcat was no match for Japan's formidable Zero, found a way to give his squadron a fighting chance. Using matchsticks on his kitchen table, he devised a solution that came to be called the Thach Weave. But as Steve Ewing is quick to point out, this was not Thach's sole contribution to the Navy. Throughout his forty-year career, Thach provided answers to multiple challenges facing the Navy, and his ideas were implemented service wide. A highly decorated ace, Thach was an early test pilot, a creative task force operations officer in the last year of World War II, and an outstanding carrier commander in the Korean War. During the Cold War, he contributed to advances in antisubmarine warfare. This biography shows him to be a charismatic leader interested in everyone around him, regardless of rank or status. His dry sense of humor and constant smile attracted people from all walks of life, and he was a popular figure in Hollywood. Thach remains a hero among naval aviators, his most famous combat tactic still used by today's pilots - List Price = $34.95 - Our Price - $28.95

(TA152) Hitchcock, Thomas - THE FOCKE-WULF TA 152- Eagle Editions - ISBN# 9780914144533 -BRAND NEW Oversized Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 2010 Printing - 208 pages - 180 photos, 40 color photos, 36 color illustrations, 75 drawing plus 19 tables and charts - The Focke-Wulf Ta 152 was a high-performance airplane produced in small numbers that appeared late in the war. It was the culmination of a research and development program that brought together an advanced high-performance engine within an innovative airframe. These, in conjunction with an entirely new wing, allowed the Ta 152 to out-perform its contemporaries at all altitudes. Presented are five enlightening and lavishly illustrated chapters, each woven around a twelve month period beginning in 1941. Read about test pilots and operational crews who flew the fighter into combat. Too, learn why the Germans rushed the Ta 152 into production while at the same time it was undergoing continuous testing and evaluation. Only one example of the Ta 152 survives and is part of the unrestored collection of WW2 fighters at the National Air and space Museum. Many of the photos in this title have never been previously published. The descriptive line drawings of complete three views, sectionals, charts, detail views and general arrangement drawings including maps. Full color profiles by leading illustrators detail camouflage and markings as interpreted from the provided photos. Four appendices include: camouflage, insignia and markings; production and Werknummern; specifications, weights, performance and equipment; pilot operating instructions and systems. This history of the Ta 152 and its lesser known cousin the Ta 153 is also a colorful journey into the Third Reich. It occurs in a time when the political and military interests of the dictatorship were clouded under a veil of self-deception. It is a story of strong rivalries, of divided loyalties and outright survival, all of which ultimately proved disastrous for the Nazi regime. This story also addresses a cast of characters that include the chief of state, his deputies, and the chief executive officers of competing aircraft companies, designers, engineers, test pilots and front-line fighter units. - $175

(Bodenplatte) Manrho, John & Putz, Ron - BODENPLATTE - THE LUFTWAFFE'S LAST HOPE - THE ATTACK ON ALLIED AIRFIELDS NEW YEAR'S DAY 1945 - Hikoki Publications - ISBN# 1902109406 - BRAND NEW Oversized Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 304pp - Index - Photos - Loss Listings - Extra Shipping on Overseas Orders Due to Size/Weight! - In the early morning of New Year's Day 1945, as the last great German offensive in Ardennes slowly smouldered to an end and the Allies prepared for a final year of war in northwest Europe, against all odds, the Luftwaffe -- assumed to be starved of fuel and fighting spirit -- launched a massive, surprise, low-level strike targeted at Allied tactical airfields throughout France, Belgium, and Holland. Planned under great secrecy, the raid gambled on using the bulk of Luftwaffe fighter assets on the Western Front, with the aim of decimating significant elements of both the British 2nd RAF and the USAAF on the ground. As the winter skies lightened, more than 900 German aircraft, -- most of them Fw 190s and Bf 109s -- swept across vulnerable and unsuspecting airfields, including Brussels and Eindhoven. Altogether, more than 200 Allied aircraft were destroyed, with a further 150 damaged. But for the Luftwaffe it was a pyrrhic victory; 271 fighters were lost and many more damaged. Worse still, of the 213 pilots lost, more than 20 were valuable formation leaders. Using hundreds of eye-witness accounts and rare photographs, this is a definitive study - $225

(Honor) Carano, Steve - NOT WITHOUT HONOR : THE NAZI POW JOURNAL OF CLAUDIO CARANO - Univ Arkansas Press - ISBN# 1557288844 -BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 159pp - Inddex - Biblio - Photos - Poetry and POW Camp Drawings - Edited by Kay Sloan - On a cold December day in l943, Claudio "Steve" Carano's B-17 bomber was shot down over the Dutch coast on the return flight to England. Thus marked the beginning of his eighteen-month incarceration in Stalag 17 b, the camp made famous in the Billy Wilder film and in the televison show Hogan's Heroes. During his confinement Carano secretly kept a journal in his Red Cross blank book, filling it with meticulously penned entries and illustrations. It takes the reader deep behind the notorious wire fence surrounding the prison and into the world where men clung to their humanity through humor, faith, camaraderie, daily rituals, and even art.Not Without Honor threads together the stories of three American POWs Carano; his buddy Bill Blackmon, who was also at Stalag 17 b; and John C. Bitzer, who survived the brutal "Death March" from northern Germany to liberation in April 1945. At times the journal reads like a thriller as he records air battles and escape attempts. Yet in their most gripping accounts, these POWs ruminate on psychological survival. The sense of community they formed was instrumental to their endurance. This compelling book allows the reader to journey with these young men as they bore firsthand witness to the best and worst of human nature - Publisher's List Price = $29.95 -Our Price - $24.45

Each Lancaster was equipped with the revolutionary bouncing bomb designed by the inventor Barnes Wallis, creator of the Wellington bomber. Designed to skip over the surface of the water, the bombs rotated at 500 rpm. They had to be dropped at a speed of 240 miles an hour and were set to explode while sinking to the base of the dam's retaining wall. It took five attempts to breach the Moehne Dam. This exhaustively researched and definitive account of one of America's premier Army Air Force bombardment units follows the 22nd Bomb Group from its Stateside prewar formation and training through its deployment to Northern Australia during the earliest days of WW II, through the end of the conflict on the island of Okinawa. Initially equipped with the B-26 Marauder, the 22nd BG pioneered the Pacific island-hopping route to Australia, then was one of the first American combat units to strike back at the Japanese in the skies over Rabaul and New Guinea. Later the 22nd partially re-equipped with the B-25 Mitchell, before becoming a B-24 Liberator Heavy Bombardment Unit and fighting its way across the Southwest Pacific to the doorstep of Japan. Revenge of the Red Raiders features over 600 pages of text and is massively illustrated by more than 1000 color and black and white photos, 4 magnificent color paintings by renowned aviation artist Jack Fellows, 48 full-color aircraft profiles, by Steve W. Ferguson and 16 detailed maps, showing all bases, the location of every mission flown, and the site of each aircraft lost. A gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress, Korkuc was lost on a bombing mission over Germany, and his family believed that his body had never been recovered. But when they learned in 1995 that Tony was actually buried at Arlington National Cemetery, his nephew Bob Korkuc set out on a seven-year quest to learn the true fate of an uncle he never knew. Finding a Fallen Hero is a compelling story that blends a wartime drama with a primer on specialized research. Kuhl, George C. - WRONG PLACE, WRONG TIME - THE 305TH BOMB GROUP & THE 2ND SCHWEINFURT RAID - Schiffer Publications - ISBN# 0887404456 -BRAND NEW Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 304pp - Notes - Biblio - Index - Photos - Maps - This is true story of the second raid on Schweinfurt, Germany by the Eighth Air Force 1st and 3rd Bombardment Divisions on 14 October 1943. On this day, the Eighth Air Force lost air superiority to the German Luftwaffe in a continuous air battle that lasted over three hours. Many refer to it as the greatest one-day air battle of World War II. Wrong Place, Wrong Time is a study of the 1st Bombardment Division and specifically the 305th Bomb Group on that fateful day. Record numbers of German fighters swarmed over the unescorted B-17s and their crews. Compelling new evidence never before published indicates that mistakes and poor leadership by several air commanders within the 1st Division caused unnecessary losses for a number of bombers and their crews. This, together with major new revelations by crew members of the 305th who flew the mission, shed light on why the 1st Division lost 45 out of 60 B-17s that day. Information for this book comes from the National Archives, the US Air Force Historical Research Center, overseas sources, and 53 surviving 305th crew members who flew this mission. George C. Kuhl was a pilot in the 305th Bomb Group during World War II. (Dad'sWar) McCaffery, Dan - DAD'S WAR : THE STORY OF A COURAGEOUS CANADIAN YOUTH WHO FLEW WITH BOMBER COMMAND - Lorimer Pub - ISBN# 1550288660 - BRAND NEW Hardcover with dust jacket (Protected in a New brodart Jacket Cover) - 239pp - Index - Notes - Biblio - Photos - When James Cyril McCaffery joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and headed off to the second world war, he expected a rollicking adventure. What he experienced instead was the worst of aerial combat in all its violence and danger. He served his country bravely but returned forever changed. Based on lengthy interviews with his father and the people who served with him and years of tireless research, acclaimed aviation author Dan McCaffery has pieced together his father's career as a tail gunner in Bomber Command. Gunner McCaffery participated in many of the best-known and most controversial actions of the war, including the raid that created the firestorm that destroyed Dresden and killed tens of thousands of civilians. Unlike many of Canada's airmen in Bomber Command, McCaffery survived his tour of duty without ever firing his guns in combat. This book is a compelling and emotionally honest look at the horrors of war, and the story of an inexperienced Canadian teenager struggling to cope with the conflict between his beliefs and what he is being asked to do in the name of duty. Dad's War is an exceptionally written view of the air war over Europe, told from a unique perspective. It goes a long way toward explaining why so many veterans have been reluctant to talk about this period in their lives - Publisher's List Price = $29.95 -Our Price - $26.95

The book includes a history of the development of the plane. My war experience began with ferrying our Marauder to England, which included a Sahara Desert stretch from Dakar to Marrakesh. Less than a third of the way there we lost the right engine but flew on safely on one engine, making an emergency landing at the oasis village of Tindouf, an old French Foreign Legion base. The Marauders were involved in the tragic, low-level mission over the E-boat pens in Holland where 60 percent of the officers and airmen and all ten aircraft were lost. This mission resulted in a reconsideration of low level operations in Europe (decision: move to medium altitude). My journal entries were created after each mission and offer details (target, date, crew members, their emotions, action narrative) of 50 combat missions (Appendix A). Considerable background on the design and construction of the Marauder is included, as well as a description of the B-26 reconstructed by the Confederate (now: Commemorative) Air Force. The book ends with a description of each of the crew members and their activity since the war if available." Publisher's List Price = $35 -Our Price - $31.95

(NoseArt) Simonsen, Clarence - RAF & RCAF NOSE ART IN WW II - Hikoki Publications - ISBN# 1902109201 - BRAND NEW Oversized Hardcover in Dust Jacket - 256pp - Over 400 Photos - Military aircraft decorated with gaudy personalized artwork, usually of the ribald and risque variety, are generally associated with American bombers and fighters, most of which flew by day. In contrast, those of their allies in the RAF and RCAF, especially the nocturnal bombers, are usually perceived as being sober and dull. That this was far from being the case is revealed in this photographic study which shows that the men who flew aircraft wearing roundels could be just as imaginative in decorating their machines. The results were as varied as the skills of the mostly untrained artists, who used all manner of sources as their inspiration, but especially pinup pictures by Vargas and Petty. The author not only shows the finished nose (and tail) art of many aircraft, but also pays tribute to many of their crews. To do so he has enlisted the aid of a number of the men responsible for painting the aircraft, as well as the assistance of Walt Disney studios -- and the model who was the original 'Petty Girl'. This work includes hundreds of close-up pictures of artwork on many different types of aircraft - Lancaster, Halifax, Mosquito, Beaufighter, Spitfire and Hurricane among them -- in many cases accompanied by the story of the aircraft and crew as well. Detailed color artwork by the author and Jon Field show many of these emblems - and the rest of the aircraft markings - $155

Ward, Chris - 5 GROUP BOMBER COMMAND : AN OPERATIONAL RECORD- Pen and Sword Books - ISBN# 184415579X -BRAND NEW Hardcover with dust jacket (Protected in New Brodart Jacket Cover) - 256pp - During the immediate period before World War Two, the RAF modified its command structure to rationalize for rapid expansion. Bomber Command was divided into six operational groups, each flying the same type of aircraft. In 1939 5 Group was flying the Handley Page Hampden, a fast, modern aircraft that carried a large payload. However, during the early daylight raids into enemy occupied Europe it suffered great losses due to its defensive armament leaving too many blind spots. The Group now turned to night bombing and mine-laying operations. During November 1940, the first Avro Manchesters entered service but were to prove dangerously unreliable. It was not until the Avro Lancaster began arriving in strength that the Group began its proud history of successful and often highly dangerous raids into the Reich, the most famous of which was No 617 Squadron's attack on the Mohne, Eder and Sorpe dams. Between 1939 and 1945 the Group flew 70,351 sorties with the loss of 1,888 aircraft. This book contains a lengthy narrative of the group's operations and contains individual squadron statistics, their commanding officers, stations and aircraft losses.
