Civil War Period French Foreign Legion buttons from the French invasion of Mexico under Maximilian 1861-1867 The two battalions of the French ForeignLegion fought in Mexico from the Spring of 1863 until March of 1867 when they were recalled to France on one of the rare occasions when they defended French soil in the Franco-Prussian War. During this period in Mexico the two battalions of the French Foreign Legion left 31 officers & 1971 enlisted soldiers behind in graves. This included 22 officers & 446 enlisted men killed in action. The French Foreign Legion was established March 16th 1831 by King Louis Philippe to fight in Algeria. It was a little respected unit until April 30th, 1863 when the 3rd company of the battalion made its historic stand near Puebla at the Battle of Hacienda Camerone. Here 3 officers & 82 enlisted legionnaires fought 2000 Mexicans under Col. Milan allied with the liberal forces under Juarez. After fighting all day only one officer 2nd Lt. Maudet & 5 legionnaires were left alive at 6 P.M. One final volley was fired & they fixed bayonets and charged the Mexicans. Three were captured and survived the battle. The Battle of Camerone brought respect to the French Foreign Legion. It is their most celebrated battle when they refused to surrender. It is celebrated as a holiday in the Legion today. All have full unit motto on the face and shanks. Dug in Mexico.

CRW-1 Spanish 1757 pillar dollar (8 Reales), Mex. City mint, VF $225.
CRW-2 Original 1780 Maria Theresa silver trade dollar, F/VF. These were the most heavily circulated silver coins used for trade purposes. They were so widely recognized around the world that they were officially restruck more than 100 years later to continue their use in world trade. This is not one of the restrikes but a fine original example that might have been used in trade in the American colonies along with Spanish Colonial silver dollars. $125.
CRW-3 French 1767 6 livres coin , F/VF (like a silver dollar). This one has the heart mark on it for the Strasbourg mint. This coin was found in Red River Parish, La. on the Red River at a site not far from Natchitoches, La. (originally Ft. St. Jean Baptiste 1715). The French ceded Louisiana to the Spanish in 1763 and the English got the Florida Parishes in La. north of Lake Pontchartrain. The first Acadian families were deported by the English to Louisiana from Nova Scotia in 1764. This is a good circulated example exchanged among the French settlers and traders in La. in Colonial times. $135. Currency from the French Revolution The French Revolution followed closely the American Revolution due in part to debts from aiding the American rebels, beginning in 1789 and extending through the Napoleonic period. The reign of terror lasted for about five years from the start with leadership being maintained by anyone who could control the mobs of Paris. The Monarchy was overthrown on Aug. 10, 1792. Louis XVI was beheaded on Jan. 21st, 1793. The guillotine became the favorite machine for execu-tions. Most of the leaders of the French Revolution including Robspierre himself became Victims of the reign of terror. A new calendar was created starting from Sept. 22, 1792, being year one of the Republic. The paper money was created in 1791, being backed by the lands confiscated from the Catholic Church. Their dates extend up to year 3 or 1795. In 1795 when Napoleon was successfully leading the French Army, he insisted in paying his soldiers with gold, replacing the by then, nearly worthless scraps of paper money. Most of these notes have two French inscriptions on them. One punishes the counterfeiter with death and the other rewards the informer of "enemies of the Republic." All have watermarks in their paper and fancy embossed seals. Notes from 1791 with a likeness of Louis XVI on the embossed seal or as a vignette on the note are scarce to rare and more valuable than the others. This reflects the hatred of the Monarchy which reached its high point during the reign of terror. In this offering of notes from the French Revolution is the rare Caisse d' Echange note of year 10 (1802). This allowed people who brought in their paper money, to exchange it for common coinage. Also, a group of Mandats Territoriaux is included. These were issued in 1796 to replace the assignats which had become worthless. These were redeemable for a specified amount of land. However the new currency was fixed at 1% of its value by Feb. 1797 and marked the end of the paper currency of the French Revolution & the bankruptcy of the government. These notes are approximately 9.5"X4". the earlier notes vary in size with the larger denomination notes usually being bigger in size. Borg & Hanot numbers & Pick's.
